Research Plan Research Question: How did Nelson Mandela play a part in putting an end to apartheid in South America during 1948-1994? Introduction A strict policy of racial segregation and oppression that existed in South Africa starting in the late 1940’s and gradually worsening until the mid-1990’s was known as apartheid. During apartheid, the government divided the country’s population into 3 racial groups, “whites,” “coloreds,” and “blacks”. At this time, South Africa was completely under the control of the white minority, who made up only a small portion of the country’s population. They created law over the years of apartheid for the “coloreds” and “blacks” that restricted the groups to certain areas of the country. All while being expected to obey a direct and strict set of laws that controlled virtually every aspect of their lives. Apartheid laws controlled where they lived, went to school, received medical care and even what jobs they could work. The white minority government believed for many years’ apartheid was needed because of the idea that non-whites were intelligently inferior and could not govern themselves. Though over the year’s activist Nelson Mandela would prove this idea to be wrong and a discriminated attempt to keep whites in dominant control of the country, by using his education and voice to fight against the government for the equal rights of everyone in South Africa.
