Fall of Humanity: Then and Now Worksheet Name: Kara M. White Course: CWV-101-511 Date: November 3rd, 2019 Instructor: Numa Gomez PART ONE: THE FALL - THEN Read the assigned readings in Topic 3 (textbook Chapter 4, Topic 3 Overview, "The Mystery of Original Sin" article, and Bible passages) and address the following questions with a total word count (including all questions and answers combined) of 500-700 words. Cite all of the resources used with in-text citations, using at least two sources from the Topic 3 readings. Include these in the reference list at the end of the assignment. Write your paragraph response directly below each question: 1. What is revealed about human nature (from Genesis 1-2)? (141 words) Our physical bodies are a very complex and perfect system that God declared good. During our creation God also gave us living souls that are complex like God. Both our bodies and souls were made to live forever on the perfect Earth He created. The earth provided for our every need. “Man was not created automaton, but as a free being with the moral ability to love God or reject God as he should choose.” (Morris, 1994) Before the serpent entered the picture Adam and Eve walked and talked with God in a state of shameless nakedness. They loved and worshiped Him the way they were created to do, experiencing the perfect relationship that we were meant to enjoy for all eternity. We ruled over His Creation just as He had commanded us, tending the garden and caring for the animals. 2. What are the consequences of the fall for human nature (from Genesis 3)? (202 words) The fall was the start of the human bodies decay that would eventually lead to death. After our death our living souls were now sent to an eternity in hell. During our time on Earth we will now experience hunger and suffering. Our hearts would now choose to reject God leading to a break in our communion with Him. We also experience shame of our nakedness and the bodies God gave us. There are many elements to the consequences of the fall of mankind. The first is to the animal kingdom they would now have carnivores and would now experience death. The fuse on the serpent is the second curse, God showed Satan he had not in fact won but instead stripped him of both the woman and the human race as his parents against God. I personally experience the third curse, as a woman I have experienced the pains of child birth and © 2017. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved.

everything related to it. I also daily fight the inner desire to rule over my husband and instead just remind myself that he is my head. Man’s curse is next and God cursed him with a hard-futile work. Finally, the Earth’s curse was to be reluctant to produce crop. 3. What is revealed about human purpose from the readings? What does it mean for humans to flourish, in other words to achieve spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being? (190 words) Bring created in God’s image means we are meant to have a special relationship with Him. He created us “to know and worship God by loving him and obeying his commands (Jeremiah 9:23-24; John 14:15).” (Diffey, 2015) Before the fall God walked and talked with us. After the fall that wasn’t possible anymore because as Isaiah 59:1-2 says it is not God who cannot see or hear us, but because of our sin we cannot hear or see Him. The only way to God according to John 3:16 is through belief in His only Son and His death on the cross. After that our life’s purpose becomes 1 Corinthians 10:31 which says “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” So in order to flourish we must follow the example set for us in the words and life of Jesus. According to Marguerite Shuster in The Mystery of Original Sin the only way to do this is to have God at the center of our lives. Meaning we have total dependence on God, fully surrendering to His will, and living to please Him. (DeMoss, 2005) 4. How might these questions about human nature, purpose, and flourishing be answered by those holding a pantheistic or atheistic (choose one) worldview? (138 words) These types of questions continue to be hard for me to answer. But since we’ve concluded that atheism is the opposite of a Christian worldview, we can draw a few natural conclusions. First if there is no God then there is no way to explain the evil in this world. I would think that human nature just existed we came into existence with evil in us. With no God there also becomes a void in man’s purpose other than to live for self. If there is no moral guide then honestly, I’m not sure what an atheist says to today’s dehumanizing ways. If every person is to live for themselves then there is nothing wrong with abuse, addiction, bullying, racism, etc. To me it seems like a rather empty life but their own happiness is their only concern. PART TWO: THE FALL - NOW Consider how the fall and humanity's exposure to good and evil are seen in the way some people treat themselves and others in dehumanizing ways today (examples: abuse, addiction, bullying, domestic violence, eating disorders, human trafficking, pornography, poverty, racism, vandalism, etc.). Choose one act of dehumanization and write the script for a short TV public service announcement in 350-500 words. Use at least two different sources from the GCU Library cited in the text and listed below in the list of references. Include the following: 

Highlight how the act of dehumanization is evident in the world today. 2

Provide solid ideas for prevention.

Include statistics, causes, and impact on people (victim, perpetrator, others as appropriate).

Discuss how a God-centered worldview contributes to a solution.

Include notes within the script about the images and video that would be included when shooting the commercial.

From the topic materials, view the two examples of a public service announcement: 1. Child Internet Safety PSA - Online Predators 2. Dangers of Sexting: What Teens Need to Know Write your paper below: The announcement would start with 20-30 seconds of short clips of men and women making powerful one sentence statements like: (108 words) My scares were not visible but they cut deep into my heart. I was too ashamed to tell anyone of my wife’s temper. All of my personal belongs were broken as a threat. She would never let me go out with the boys, and she’d get angry when I spoke to my family. o He manipulated me into quitting my job to stay home and keep his house and make him dinner. o I lied to the nurse about my split lip which needed five stitches. o I called in sick to work for three days after he punched me till I was unconscious. o o o o

Then I would have a famous person like Rihanna, Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theon, or Christina Aguilera quote these statistics from The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). (Harvey-Jenner, C August 21, 2018) (128 words) o “In the United States, an average of 20 people experience intimate partner physical violence every minute. This equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually. o 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder. o 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. This includes a range of behaviors and in some cases might not be considered “domestic violence”. o On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines nationwide receive over 20,000 calls. o Only 34% of people who are injured by intimate partners receive medical care for their injuries.” (NCADV Domestic Violence Fact Sheet) Then I’d have one of the NCADV spokespeople come on the screen to read this while some sad undertone music played. (342 words) 3

These women and men have experienced the dehumanization of domestic abuse. It is never anything to be ashamed of. It occurred more often than most will admit. Sadly, there is no way to prevent the abuse from happening because the victim has done absolutely nothing to deserve or cause the abuse no matter what the perpetrator tried to convince them of. You can’t even give specific characteristics of actions that are definitely warning signs because if varies do much from one perpetrator to the next. What we can tell any woman or man currently suffering silently is that your abuser is trying to be a god in your life, they want all the power they can take from you. Leaving is going to take more than your strength. Instead, you will need to embrace the omnipotent power of God, you must believe that He has power over all evil. Pastors all over the country cannot stress enough your value as a person created by God is more sacred than your marriage vows. (Zust, Housley, & Klatkę, 2017). Our only course of action is to continue to build the resources in communities to help victims escape these toxic relationships and then the resources they need to recover. As Senlin Ward says in his journal article Community Response to Domestic Violence, this can be done by developing a council in your community with experienced members to assess and create better services in your community for escape and healing. Then your community needs to provide resource to help create safety plans because these are the key to survival. This committee needs to reach out to your local churches to work alongside secular therapists to help victims develop a healthy Christian worldview because a deeper understanding of God and His love for every individual is the only way to ensure a victim will not return or repeat the abuse with a different partner. Please reach out to your local community shelters and find out what you can do to help victims of domestic violence in your neighborhoods.
