The Instructional Approaches, Methods, Techniques and Strategies in the teaching of Araling Panlipunan. Approach in Teaching Araling Panlipunan It is a set of principles, beliefs, or ideas about the nature of learning which is translated into the classroom. Some of the approaches are the following: •

Constructivist Approach Students come to class with entry knowledge and skills. As well as teacher construct meaning based on prior knowledge and experience while learning is social and active. In this approach, it is important that we know our students are coming from but not to judge them, but to be able to provide the most suitable learning environment for them to discover what needed to be learned and unlearned.



Collaborative Approach Students learn better when they learn with others. Learners work together towards a common goal. Teacher allow peer teaching as peer learning or team Learning is used.



Reflective Approach Teacher analyze their own practice and underlying basis to consider alternative means for achieving their ends.





Conceptual Approach Students figure out the attributes of a group or category that has already been formed by the teacher. Integrative Approach Teaching and learning are more meaningful and further enriched if lesson is connected to other disciplines (interdisciplinary) and is connected to real life experiences (transdisciplinary).

Methods in Teaching Araling Panlipunan It is a systematic way of doing something. A series of related and progressive acts performed by a teacher and students to achieve the objective of the lesson. Some of the methods are the following: •

Thematic Method Learning revolves around a theme.



Demonstration Method In the demonstration method, the teacher or an assigned student or groups shows how a process is done while the students become observers. The demonstrator is knowledgeable in preparing the apparatus needed according to the steps to be followed. The rest of the class becomes focused on the activity and concentration on the subject is assured.



Activity Method Activity method is a technique adopted by a teacher to emphasize his or her method of teaching through activity in which the students participate rigorously and bring about efficient learning experiences. It is a method in which the child is actively involved in participating mentally and physically. Learning by doing is the main focus in this method.



Inquiry Method The core of inquiry is a spontaneous and a self-directed exploration. Teachers must provide learners with opportunities to explore, inquire and discover new learning.

Techniques in Teaching Araling Panlipunan It is a set of steps we follow when we teach. It is the personal art and style of the teacher in carrying out the procedure of teaching. Some of the techniques are the following: •







During lecture, the following techniques can be use: o Outlining Technique o Competent Technique o Sequential Technique o Relevance Technique In discussion, the following techniques can be use: o Small group discussion technique o Socialized classroom technique o Direct instruction technique o Panel discussion technique o Recitation technique o Interview technique During reporting, the following techniques can be use: o Unit or Morrisonian technique o Individual or group reporting technique o Reading or storytelling technique o Schematic technique o Symposium technique During the activity, the following techniques can be use: o Project technique







o Fieldtrip technique o Dramatization technique o Role-playing technique o Brain storming technique o Debate technique In demonstration, the following techniques can be use: o Teacher-directed technique o Student-directed technique o Teacher-student directed technique In integrated method, the following techniques can be use: o Lecture-discussion o Lecture-demonstration o Film showing-discussion In traditional method, the following techniques can be use: o Textbook learning o Role-playing technique o Directed technique o Memorization

Instructional Strategies in Teaching Araling Panlipunan It is a set of decisions to achieve an objective that results in plan. It is a way of approaching a problem or task or planned design for controlling and manipulating certain information. Some of the strategies are the following: •







Role Playing. This is one of the time-tested strategies in teaching Araling Panlipunan. Through the assumption of different historical characters, the students would enjoy and learn the subject. Visualization and Imagination Exercise. This is one effective way to create a picture of a situation of any historical event using the power of the mind. The students may have a vivid picture of a person, place and event once the mind will be utilized in imagination. Perspective Taking. This is one exceptional approach wherein a student is asked to understand and appreciate where a certain person is coming from. This is a way to put oneself in the place of another person in order to further tolerate a certain character with a particular personality. Discussion. The active discussion with the students is truly worthwhile. It is truly anticipated that a dynamic discussion of different topics in Araling Panlipunan may lead to better learning and to better results.













Simulation Games. Imitation or reproduction of people in a certain situation may be much fruitful. Here, the student may feel the situation and as part of the game may suggest better solutions to the problem being shown. Reading and Writing Quotation. The quotation on history or from people in history may stimulate and inspire the students to be better persons. Once the teacher presents a quotation before the class, then the students’ attention may be keenly caught. Web Charting. This is one way to show the relationship of ideas using the web chart. By means of web charting the students will have a clear picture of complex ideas and making them simple. Use of Films and Photography. The images of people, places, and events are seen through films and photography. The actual picture of significant characters and places who took parts in historical events is much visible. Telling Stories. Students love to hear stories most especially from their teachers. The students learn through listening to the historical stories as uttered by the Araling Panlipunan teacher. Songs and Poems. There are songs and poems that feature topics in Araling Panlipunan.

These are effective compositions which the teacher may use in teaching the subject more productively. These are the strategies and approaches in teaching Araling Panlipunan which may be found effective. Indeed, teaching Araling Panlipunan should be creative, integrative, challenging and active.
