DEMOGRAPHY- Migration

Migration on a global Scale Exponential increase: Migration is increasing, and the amount it’s increasing by is increasing Why is migration happening more than ever? Most people migrate for economic reasons. People think about emigrating from places that have few job opportunities, and they immigrate to places where jobs seem to be available. Because of economic restructuring, job prospects often vary from one country to another and within regions of the same country. o It is physically easier to move countries with accessible transport o Many countries rely on immigration and encourage it o International and civil war continue to be a part of our global community.

Migration in UK Periods/Events in recent British history that have been linked with considerable migration to the UK: o The Windrush Generation (1941 - 1978) After WW2, the country needed ‘rebuilding’. The government invited people from the Caribbean to migrate to the UK to provide labour.

o New Countries joining the EU (2004 - 2019) In 2004, Poland and other Eastern European countries joined the EU, which resulted in their citizens being able to move to the UK.

How to manage Migration? Assimilation This is the idea that immigrants should ‘become like’ national citizens and adopt their norms, values and ways of life. What Are the Problems with This Approach? o Immigrants may feel inherently wrong and disliked o Immigrants may want to retain all or part of their cultural identity.

Multiculturalism This is the idea that immigrants should retain a separate cultural identity, by allowing shallow cultural diversity, but not deep diversity (Eriksen). o Shallow diversity: Aspects of culture that can co-exist with native culture, such as music and food. o Deep diversity: Aspects of culture which the native culture views as offensive....
