Expected Pharmacological Action Stimulates hepatic production of glucose form glycogen stores. Relaxes the musculature of the GI tract, temporarily inhibiting movement.
Therapeutic Use - Increase in blood glucose - Relaxation of GI, musculature, faciliaitaing radiographic examination
Complications CNS: chills, confusion, fever CV: Hypotension ENDO: Hyperglycemic hyperosmolar coma Skin: Pruritis, rash
Contraindications/Precautions Hyposersensitivity, diabtetic coma with excessively elevated blood glucose level, overhydration or severe dehydration

Medication Administration IM- Hyperglycemic IV- Hyperglycemic SC- Hyperglycemic IV & IM- Effect on GI musculature
Nursing Interventions Provide a source of oral glucose to treat mild hypoglycemia. Emergency treatment consists of IV glucose, glucagon, or epinephrine. Use caution during aerobic exercise. Assess exercise tolerance frequently.
Corticosteriods, corticotropin- increased risk of fluid and electrolyte imbalance if dextrose solution contains sodium ions Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Monitor hypersentivity reactions and anaphylaxis (pulmonary symptoms). Assess BP and compare normal values

Educate patient about the signs of hypoglycemia. Emophasize tht early recognition and admin of glucose may prevent acute reactions. Report severe or plrolonged GI reactions such as nausea and vomiting.
