Description

DFM2 TASK 2: SEL RESPONSE A.  Maria is from a biracial dynamic. Her father is African American, and her mother is Hispanic.  Maria lives in a rural community, predominately white middle class.  Maria’s cultural background is biracial. She was uprooted from a large city to a small town.

B. 1. One realistic action I would address is Maria’s thoughts of suicide as well as her mental health. I would reach out to school professionals such as the school counselor and the principal to bring it to their attention. I would contact Maria’s parents to make them aware of the situation.

A. The school principal can help Maria by setting in place a bully prevention order. The other students that see Maria getting bullied can follow the 3 R’s: Recognize, Respond, and Report. Having confidential sessions with the counselor can help Maria with various ways to make safe decisions. Maria can also receive the support she needs to address her mental health.

2. I would call a parent/teacher conference that includes the principal and the counselor. By involving everyone, we as a community can address and solve the issue.

C. I am an African American who grew up in a large city with six siblings and one parent. My mother worked very hard to provide for us. We didn’t have a lot of money. However, we had lots of love and family time. My mother made sure we did a family vacation every summer. My family’s educational background is diverse such as nurses, preachers, military, teachers, and entrepreneurs. My community was in the lower/ middle-class rating. We lived in a 3-bedroom house that burned down after 14 years of living there. My sibling and I went to the same elementary, middle, and high school. High school was when I encountered bullying. Bullying is not ok.

1. My response to Maria would be to connect with her from dealing with bullying first-hand. I would let her know that she is unique and a wonderful person inside and out. As a teacher, I would have students do a group project on different cultural backgrounds. By doing this, the students will become aware and understand various cultures.
