Description

A. Marias is a thirteen-year-old girl who moved to a new home and school in the middle of the year. Maria is half Hispanic and half African American. They moved from a large city to a small rural town. Her small town is predominately white and middle class. A lot of the kids dress different at her new school and Maria gets made fun of because she looks different than the other students. Some students in her school created a “I hate Maria” site that allows her classmates to post negatively about her. They also have taken inappropriate pictures of Maria and posted them on the site. She has told her parents that she is being bullied but they only respond with she is being too sensitive. Because Maria isn’t getting any help she is having dark thoughts of killing herself and cannot focus on lessons in her classroom. B. One way as a teacher to help Maria would talk to the principle and counselor to get the website taken down. Allowing Maria to take some time out of her day to talk to a school counselor to help her feel as if she does have someone that will listen to her. To involve Marias family, you as a teacher could set up a meeting with them and discuss the things going on at school and talk to them about how Maria feels. During that meeting you would also want to let her family know what you as the teacher would also be doing to put a stop to the bullying. C. I am a middle-class white female. I grew up in a small town and attended a small high school. Everyone knew everyone, and their parents grew up together. My parents are divorced, and I live with my mom and step-father. I am also a Christian and attend church regularly. My background is completely different that Marias. My cultural background could affect how I respond to Marias because I have not had to face what Maria goes through. I wouldn’t be able to sympathize with her as for someone that is more like Maria....
