Discussion 6: Culture of Safety Tiffani Saylor Southern New Hampshire University IHP-430-H1325 Healthcare Quality Management

Discus the importance of using benchmarking tools and how they promote a culture of safety in healthcare organizations. Examine the importance of effective teams and how they contribute to high-quality care and culture safety in the organization.

Benchmarking is a process of comparing an organization’s processes and outcomes against those of other organization (Ross, 2014). In organizations using the internal benchmarking tool, administrators can find out which of their clinics has a higher patient satisfaction rating. This can be used to monitor aids with the deduction of what needs to be fixed within a practice to improve safety. Internal benchmarking takes place between departments, divisions, or offices within the same hospital or clinic (Foley, 2017). This can be a very important tool and helpful when it is used correctly. Processing, monitoring, complete staff involvement, and continuous reviewal of all departments are part of this process. Communication is key for any organization and should be a high priority in staff members having a dashboard in order to improve communication skills this can be effective in organizations as they use patient safety culture, because that is commonly the focus or result of a performance improvement initiative in the health care setting.

Effective teams must have knowledge of medical processes along with their patient’s needs, keeping their benchmarking goals along with having employees that have those same goals. The organization must maintain leadership to guarantee that staff is interested toward achieving the targets and must make monitoring systems to constantly judge and communicate performance to employees (Ross, 2014). Having a focused team on competitive benchmarking helps by using

information that is gathered in this measure is used to improve performance and make sure that there is a higher patient safety/satisfaction and employee safety/satisfaction then a competitor. Competitive benchmarking means to meet the performance of competing organizations (Ross, 2014). Teamwork is very important in this and every staff member being capable of preventing the needs of their co-workers, teamwork is the highest part in accomplishing trustworthiness within a healthcare facility. There is a saying the goes “teamwork makes the dream work” and I think that if you are using correct teamwork methods and focusing at the tasks at hand and everyone has the same goal set in mind that things will work out smoothly and create a positive workflow in order to work with their benchmarking goals.
