Module discussion #6 discusses strains of feminist thought, application of the law, and the Dodd Frank Act....

Description

What are the different strains of feminist thought? What do they have in common? How do they differ? The different strains of feminist thought include liberal feminism, marxist feminism, socialist feminism, radical feminism, and postmodern feminism. Liberal feminism is focused on discrimination and views legal custom restraints as the main barries for women. Marxist feminists are concerned with the way the criminal justice system favors interests of the upper class at the expense of the lower class. Socialist feminists argue that women are oppressed because of their subordinate economic position and their “class” as a woman. Radical feminists believe the source of the problem stems from a male-dominated society. Postmodern feminists advocate for multiple truths and stress the importance of alternative accounts. This in turn shows the privilege embedded in dominant social constructions. These feminist thoughts all have in common the fact that they are concerned with women’s oppression, as well as marginalization. The way feminism differs shows where they view the source of the oppression, and what implications should be. Barak, G., Leighton, P., & Cotton, A. (2018). What are they? Provides examples of each. In the textbook it says selective enforcement “refers to the fact that most harms perpetrated by the affluent are beyond incrimination and not part of the criminal law” (Barak et al., 2018). Differential application is when police officers, prosecutors, and other people who work in the criminal justice system, use their discretion and ignore or minimize the consequences. This happens when harms that are a part of the criminal law are committed by people who hold political or economic power. An example of this would be a politician paying a university in order for their child to be accepted, and then receiving the bare minimum sentence. Barak, G., Leighton, P., & Cotton, A. (2018). Class, Race, Gender, and Crime(5th ed., pp. 184). The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc. What is the Dodd Frank act? What specifically is it intended to do? Why was it passed? Has it had the intended effect? When the Dodd Frank legislation was passed, the original goal was to curb the power of big banks. This act was passed in order to avoid another financial crisis like the one that occurred in 2008. The Dodd Frank legislation put regulations on the financial industry and created programs that stopped mortgage companies and lenders from taking advantage of consumers. Many

believe Dodd Frank reforms are hollow and provide loopholes that bail out the financial industry. Having all of these barriers, people believe this burdens investors and slows economic growth. Donald Trump had some regulations in the Dodd Frank legislation rolled back. The Dodd Frank Act has changed how financial institutions operate but the question is how long will this law be in full effect. Barak, G., Leighton, P., & Cotton, A. (2018).
