After completing this week's readings and listening to the lectures, you should be able to answer and discuss the following: Post (1.5 %): Create a thread and include your name. Respond to the following question: What western ideas were undermined by the experience of World War I and how did the aftermath of this war lead to the rise of totalitarian regimes in Europe? Reply (0.5 %): Reply to the posts of at least two of your classmates stating why you agree or disagree with their answer. You must give a substantive reply and refrain from just saying "I agree" or "Great answer." The western idea of isolation was undermined through the experience of World War I. Westerners could no longer ignore the conflicts and issues present in Europe and found the need to intervene. Another western idea that was influence by war was the value placed on female and male gender roles. While men were away at war, women were trusted and expected to take on a greater amount of responsibility in the household. Women became the new providers and heads of the household while their husbands were away. Additionally, the industrialization of this war contributed to a new style of warfare and also made military costs much higher leading many countries involved to face economic hardship. As a result of World War I, Europe was burdened by tremendous military debts and faced the task of rebuilding several countries. When people experience an exceptional amounts of stress from job and land loss, they are more susceptible to and open-minded to the ideas of strong leaders. The great economic distress resulting in Europe after World War I lead to the uprising of totalitarian regimes. Unlike dictatorships, totalitarian regimes establish complete political, social, and cultural control over their people. Totalitarian leaders are able to control the people of their country by means of mass communication. Communist, Fascist and Nazi governments were domineered by aggressively powerful totalitarian leaders, and the extreme actions which occurred under their control led to controversy that caused World War II, and the formation of Soviet Russia and Communist China....
