Introduction When discussing Total Quality Control, we think of Edwards Deming, Joseph Juran and Armand Feigenbaum and little of Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa. All of these significant minds played a role in bringing about Total Quality Control, so why is it that we know little of Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa and his contributions. During my time of research, I have discovered a great deal on who he is and how he helped shape today’s workforce. Life Background Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa was born on July 13, 1915 in Tokyo Japan. He was apart of a prestige family and the oldest of eight sons. Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa started his journey by following in his father’s footsteps, Ichiro Ishikawa. Ichiro Ishikawa was the first chairman of the Deming Prize Committee. Watson. G (2015, September. Like Father, Like Son) “His focus was to convince Japanese business leaders of their responsibility to pursue quality as a key business objective for the recovery of Japan’s economy during the postwar reconstruction years”. In 1939, Dr. Ishikawa obtained his first degree in applied chemistry from the University of Tokyo. Shortly after his graduation he joined the Navy as a Naval Technical Officer until 1941. After the Navy, he joined the Nissan Liquid Fuel Company. The University of Tokyo presented Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa with the opportunity of becoming an associate professor in 1947. From there, he became the President of Musashi Institute of Technology and later just as his father, joined JUSE (Union of Japanese Scientist and Engineers). Here his true journey began. Contribution to Quality Control As we are aware, Dr. Ishikawa did not invent quality control. Quality control was officially introduced to Japan by America after World War 2. History-Biography (2018, February. Kaoru Ishikawa) “Ishikawa defines quality control as a method that consists in developing,

designing, elaborating and maintaining a quality product that is economical, useful and always satisfactory for the consumer”. In the 1960’s Dr. Ishikawa presented quality circles to the JUSE. He defined quality circles as the following “A group of workers who do the same or similar work, who meet regularly on company time to identify, analyze and solve work-related problems using quality improvement techniques, most often using the seven quality tools”. However, what Dr. Ishikawa is mainly known for is his “fishbone diagram” one of his seven basic quality tools. Contributor. S (2019, March. Contribution to The Theory of Process Improvement) “The cause and effect diagram is used by global organizations in order to understand the causes behind the quality gaps and the effects of these gaps on the overall functioning of the organization”. Besides these two achievements, Dr. Ishikawa wrote several books on Total Quality Control. Later after his death, these translated from the Japanese language to English. By this happening he not only disseminated his work in Asia but also in North America. Conclusion Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa contributions was built on Deming’s fourteen points. Ho.S (1999. Operations and Quality Management) “In a speech to mark the 1000th quality circle convention in Japan on 7th April 1981, he described how his work took him in this direction. I first considered how best to get the grassroot workers to understand and practise Quality Control. The ideal was to educate all people working at factories throughout the country but this was asking too much. Therefore I thought of educating factory foremen or on-the-spot-leaders in the first place”. By emphasizing the importance of quality control on all levels within an organization, companies such as IBM, Vanguard and Denso have gained the respect of their employees. This
