Drug name: (generic): Celecoxib Drug name: (brand/trade): Celebrex Prefix: Cycline Dose: 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg, 400mg Route: Oral Frequency: 200 mg PO once daily or divided q12hr. 400mg initial dose + 200mg prn Classification: NSAID Action: The mechanism of action of celecoxib is due to selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is responsible for prostaglandin synthesis, an integral part of the pain and inflammation pathway.

Use/Purpose: Celecoxib (Celebrex) is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints), rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints), and ankylosing spondylitis(arthritis that mainly affects the spine)

Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to celecoxib or any components of the drug product or sulfonamides. History of asthma, urticaria, or other allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs. In the setting of CABG surgery.

Side effects: Stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, dizziness headache, respiratory tract infection. Chest pain or heart attack, Stroke. Very severe headache with no other cause, High blood pressure Edema. Bleeding and ulcers in your stomach and intestine. Skin reactions, including rash or blisters. Adverse effects: Abnormal growth in the breast. Arm, back, or jaw pain. Bloody or black, tarry stools. Burning feeling in the chest or stomach. Burning or stinging of the skin. Burning, tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands, arms, feet, or legs. chest tightness or heaviness. congestion in the chest.

Nursing considerations: Assess the range of motion, degree of swelling, and pain in affected joints before and periodically throughout therapy. Assess patient for allergy to sulfonamides, aspirin, or NSAIDs. Patients with these allergies should not receive celecoxib. Assess patient for skin rash frequently during therapy. Patient education: Instruct patient to take celecoxib exactly as directed. Do not take more than the prescribed dose. Increasing doses does not appear to increase effectiveness. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest period of time. Advise patient to notify health care professional promptly if signs or symptoms of GI toxicity (abdominal pain, black stools), cardiovascular effects (chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, slurring of speech), skin rash, unexplained weight gain, or edema occurs....
