Literacy Mini-Lesson Template – Pre-K State Literacy Standard

Objective

New York State Prekindergarten Speaking and Listening Standards - PKSL Comprehension and Collaboration PKSL1b: Participate in conversations through multiple exchanges. In groups of three, students will engage in conversations prompted by several questions. Students will take turns replying, listening, and responding to each other’s answers.

Pre-Assessment

Ask students to write down their favorite food and describe in detail why they like it.

Learning Activity

After the teacher reads Cool Food Facts for Kids : Food Book for Children | Children's Science & Nature Books By: Baby Professor, the same small groups will be asked to read out loud and share in their group their favorite food and why followed up by more conversation driven questions. Afterwards each group will be provided with a copy of the book and discuss what they found interesting from the book.

Post-Assessment

Using exit tickets, at the end of the lesson students will be asked to identify (but not limited to) 3 food facts from the book.

Reading:  Was able to identify several singular sight words from the learning activity book, but required prompting from its corresponding image or picture  Was able to their own response out loud clearly Writing:  Was able to write what his favorite food was, however, did not additional provide details to why  Was able to write down one fact from the text of the book with several errors and inaccuracies Listening  Was able to agree and approve with excitement to another student’s response to an instructional question from the teacher  Was able to retell one event (food fact) Speaking  Demonstrated difficulty waiting to take their turn and often interrupted others in the group  Generally, speaks very clearly with minimal or free of linguistic errors with accurate vocabulary usage Based on these results, Jacob can use additional support in his reading and writing skills. He has the capacity to engage in multitude of literacy-based activities but requires fine tuning specifically in his text and phonetic based skills.
