RICA Essay After reading the scenario, it seems that Aaron is struggling with his alphabetic skills such as phonemic awareness, letter/sound relationships and understanding how to decode unfamiliar words in the book he was reading, which encompasses a range of competency’s in Domain 2. Aaron seems to be struggling with his letter/sound relationships because when his tutor, Rona, tries to help him sound out the word bed, he makes the sound for /a/ instead of the sound for /e/. This is also apparent when trying to sound out the sentence “I am so tired” when he replaces the letter m with the /n/ sound and the letter o with the /u/ sound. Aaron is having trouble reading because he struggles with primary principles that promote a child’s ability to be able to read. Often times when children are not properly educated in the competency’s discussed within Domain 2, they get frustrated when trying to read because they do not have all of the skills needed, which Aaron is starting to show signs of. An instructional strategy or activity that Aaron could benefit from would be one that addresses letter/sound relationships. An activity that focuses on showing cards with letters on them and practicing the sounds of the letters or providing an auditory technology device for the student that says the sound of a letter and asking them to find the card of the letter that makes that sound. This activity would be helpful for Aaron because it really seems like his ability to read is being stumped by understanding what certain letters sound like and his ability to formulate how a word sounds because of that. With these kinds of activities in place, Aaron will begin to become a better reader and gain a love for reading....
