Compare and Contrast Essay: The Emperor Triumphant and The Justinian Mosaic Through human life there has been many different styles ,techniques, and meaning of art. The most impressive art is Byzantine architecture and mosaic works because of not being focus on the traditional naturalism. Byzantine architecture is different than Greek architecture because there churches are usually planned to be basilica which is a shape like a cross or has a central plan which focuses on a pentagon shape in the middle of the church. Bysantine mosaic are made of small titles of glass or gold that reflect light. Many of the mosaics are about Christ , his apothes , the emperor, the emperor's wife, Angels, and symbolic figure that relate to god. This essay will focus on two Byzantine artworks are San Vitale and the Justinian Mosaic and The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory).San Vitale and the Justinian Mosaic is located in the Italian city of Ravenna and inside the church of San Vitale. This 6th century church is a centrally planned which means it focus is at the center. The Justinian Mosaic is a mosaic of the emperor and his wife to establish easthern imperial control.Also. the religion of chritian orthodox and rep resentation of the church. The second piece of artwork is The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory)is a large panel made out of ivory that date back to early 6th century.The large panel is divided into 4 smaller panel. Each panel is a deep carving of the emperor on a house, christ , a general and people that have been conquered.This essay will compare and contrast the formal qualities of two artworks. The formal qualities that will be addressed in both artworks is material

San Vitale and the Justinian Mosaic and The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory) are different from the type of material they are made from.The San Vitale is located in Ravana and the church is in the shape of an octagon which means it is a centrally planned. The church is made out of bricks that were taken from ancient roman buildings. Inside of the church each wall had window and the interior is covered with magnificent mosaics that are colorful and covered with gold. The church of San Vitale is different than The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory) because of size , material , and meaning. The Justinian Mosaic is the most important mosaic inside the church of San Vitale because it shows the emperor Justinian and his connect with the church.The Justinian Mosaic is made of small titles of glass and gold . This material is used to make the figure abstract, colorful , to show the creases of clothing that show dimension and shadows, and the detail in each face. If this mosaic was made out of ivory which the The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory)is made out of it would not show the colorful pattern that symbolizes who each person identifies , the rough texture, and the representation of god by the gold background. The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory) is a large panel divided into 4 smaller panel made out of ivory. The material ivory is used for this artwork to show three dimensional figure and deep carving of the figures. The textures of the material is smooth unlike the Justinian Mosaic.The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory) is different from the Justinian Mosaic because the ivory material used is letting it have 3 dimension , light and dark shadows , pattern in the clothing ,and relate to some characteristic of roman art period. The Justinian Mosaic used lines to use create creases in the clothing and sharp point in the object the figures are holding.The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory) used lines to separate each panel , in the clothing each figure in the panels, and the very small details like the horse,and the object each figure is holding.Also, for both artwork to show dimension. The Justinian Mosaic used shadows to show dimenion. The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory) used the deeping craving to show dimenion. This compare and contrast essay on The Emperor Triumphant (Barberini Ivory) and San Vitale and the Justinian Mosaic. The formal qualities are material and lines. Both artworks are from the early 6th century of the Byzantine empire. Both artworks show characteristic of dimension , religion, powerful meaning to religion ,and detail in showing who the person is. A common aspect of The Byzantine empire is about religion and the emperor....
