Questioning Strategies and Critical Thinking assignment...

Description

1 Amber Holmstedt ELM-480 March 14, 2021 Professor Cordes Questioning Strategies and Critical Thinking For this assignment, I have chosen to use my Listening and Speaking lesson plan for the novel Charlotte’s Web. During this lesson, students will be reading the book, Charlotte’s Web. The main focus will be on collaborative discussions, expressing ones ideas and identifying reasons and evidence from a speaker. Students will learn by reading, listening and expressing themselves creatively. This lesson covers many California learning standards. This lesson covers standard CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACT.SL.4.1.C, CCSS.ELALITERACY.SL.4.1.D, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.3 and CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.5. While working through this lesson, students will complete specific learning targets/objectives. When given a vocabulary worksheet, students will listen to the teacher during the class discussion and accurately write down the definitions. When given a writing prompt worksheet, students will write what they would do with a pet pig and explain why pigs would be a great pet. Students will then read their writing aloud and actively listen while others present. When given a chapters 3&4 worksheet, students will show what they learned while reading and actively listening to others read. During group and class discussions, students will actively participate. Lastly, when given a ven-diagram, students will compare and contrast the books two main characters. Throughout this lesson, I will be asking content- or skill-based questions that are appropriate for students’ grade and ability levels for each objective. This way students are

2 actively learning and thinking critically. For the vocabulary section of this lesson I will ask the following questions. Has anyone heard of these words before? Can anyone use a word that they recognize in a sentence? For the anticipatory set, students will see different quotes from the novel displayed on the board. I will ask each student pick their favorite quote and explain it in their own words. This Anticipatory set will get the students thinking about the deeper meaning of each quote. Activities like this one help the students build off of their ideas and others ideas. This helps students think critically. While doing a writing assignment called “If I Had a Pet Pig”, students will be given the opportunity to express themselves creatively and artistically. I will ask students to explain why they think a pig would be a great pet. There is no right or wrong answer to this question. This assignment is a fun way to get students thinking and writing. There are also opportunities in this lesson plan for encouraging a higher level of thinking. It is important for educators to take all students into consideration. Every student learns differently and it is important to teach to a student’s strengths. This lesson includes direct instruction, indirect instruction, collaborative learning and independent study. Oral language is one of the foundations for literacy. Listening allows students to follow directions and make sense of oral communication. For example, when a student is to ask a question, other students listen. By listening, this may clarify other students questions. With assignments and assessment, students are collaborating and reviewing content every step of the way. By collaborating with others, students are working on their active listening skills and learning to expand conversation. This encourages higher and critical thinking. Some questions that I will as the class to encourage this level of thinking is, “In the beginning of Charlotte's Web, Fern saves Wilbur from death. Would you have saved Wilbur too? Why or why not? Tell about a time when you stood up for someone smaller or weaker than yourself”. I want students to really think about these three

3 questions and give detailed reasons and examples. With these questions, students will be incorporating a real life experience with what they learned in the book. There are many ways that questioning strategies can facilitate student comprehension and critical thinking related to what they are reading. Using questions helps readers stay engaged with the text. It also helps the reader clarify what they are reading (Caffrey, 2021). Questions can also help struggling readers become more interested. Effective questioning should be used throughout an entire lesson; the beginning middle and end. This helps students activate prior knowledge, make predictions and increase interest (Caffrey, 2021). It is a great way to keep students engaged and on their toes. It can turn a non-interested reader to a interested reader. By doing this strategy, teachers take all of the measures needed to ensure their students are comprehending what they are reading.
