Standards

Aligned Learning Objectives Students will match sentences to pictures.

Selected Standard #1: CCSS.ELALITERACY.RL.K.7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).

Selected Standard #2: CCSS.ELALITERACY.SL.K.5 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail.

Students will decorate a paper jack-o-lantern giving it specific characteristics (i.e., two eyes, one nose and a mouth).

Students will use manipulatives to count from 0 to 100. Selected Standard #3: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens.

Inquiry Based Instructional Strategies The students will cut and paste pictures to the corresponding sentence in order to make a short story. By using scissors, they are increasing their fine motor skills as well as their hand-eyecoordination (Bishop, 2018). Students will create a jack-o-lantern and give it various features and characteristics. They will have to explain the different characteristics and why they chose to draw them. The students will use manipulatives such as bingo chips or marbles to count. By using fine motor skills children are aiding their counting skills and strengthening those motor skills by picking up the chips or marbles (Fischer, Suggate, Schmirl, & Stoeger, 2018).

Higher Order Question #1 How do pictures in a story help us to read the story?

Higher Order Question #2

Higher Order Question #3

How can pictures help us read words that we don’t understand?

Why are pictures important for story books?

The students will have to look at three pictures and tell a story based off of the pictures.

How does adding details to pictures change the picture?

Why do illustrators draw specific details when creating a picture?

How is your jack-o-lantern different than your neighbors? How is it similar?

What are numbers?

How do we use numbers every day?

Which manipulative is the best to use for counting? Why is that tool the easiest to use?

After creating their jack-olanterns the students will have to present them to the class and tell a short story about that pumpkin. Exit ticket, each student will have to show their tray with the marbles or chips having a certain number in them, this number will be pre-determined by the teacher.
