Description

03.02 Assignment Instructions Directions: Using complete sentences, answer the following questions about the themes in "The Cask of Amontillado": 1. How does the author want the reader to feel while reading "The Cask of Amontillado"? The author is trying to portray a suspenseful feeling throughout the story. 2. What techniques does the author use to help you visualize the place, the people, and the events that are taking place within the story? In Poe's writing, he uses a great deal of imagery. His use of figures of speech makes the reader feel as if they are watching the story unfold, and they can experience the atmosphere described. There are many details in plot about setting and mood, which sounds mostly dark and cold in this story. 3. How has the author described the characters to make them seem like real people? The author uses different writing techniques to make the characters seem like real people. While he focuses on imageries and detailed descriptions of his characters' appearances, he also gives his readers a true sense of their personalities, so they feel like they're dealing with a real person. 4. Does the author expect the reader to make an emotional connection to the story? Explain your answer. It is obvious that the author is trying to evoke emotions in the reader. In all of Poe's works, he displays special abilities to convey the thoughts and feelings of readers. The author is trying to convince us to feel the same way about Fortunato as he does. Throughout the entire story, the author did everything to manipulate readers and convince them that Fortunato is indeed evil. 5. Think back to the events that take place in "The Cask of Amontillado," and think about the attitudes and actions of the characters. Now, write a theme statement for "The Cask of Amontillado." I feel that the theme of the story is 'revenge is not always the answer.' Once Fortunato is dead, and the narrator feels nothing but an almost overwhelming sense of guilt and regret. In conclusion, the author proved himself to be a psycho and the revenge left him in pain rather than relieved....
