Topic: What is a preposition? How to use and where to use appropriate preposition? Explain and give examples of each preposition.

Answer: Definition: A Preposition is a combination of two words “Pre” and “Position” which means “Place Before”. It is a word that is used before a noun or pronoun and shows its relation with other parts of the sentence.

For example: Ali is in school. The book is on the table Ali is going to school. In these above examples the underlined words like in, on, to are prepositions.

Because they are relating a noun (Ali) to an object (school). Simply we can define the preposition a “connecting word”.

Types of Preposition: There are many types of preposition but only 11 are discussed below:

IN: IN preposition is used in the following cases: 1. When a place or a period is discussed. e.g. Ali lives in Lahore. Ali visited Murree in March. 2. Within the boundary of something. e.g. Hammad is in the room. He was lying in the bed. 3. when we have to show a state or condition. e.g. I am in love.

ON: ON preposition is used in the following cases: 1. When someone is supported by somebody/something. e.g. He was standing on one foot. 2. To show the mean of transport. e.g. I came on my bike. He was on the plane from New York. 3. To show day or date. e.g. I came on Sunday.

TO preposition is used in the following cases: 1. To show direction. e.g: He has gone to the west. 2. To mention a person that receives something. e.g: Ali gave a gift to his sister. 3. To mention a Place. e.g: I am going to Multan.

AT: AT preposition is used in the following cases: 1.To point out the location of something. e.g: My shop is at the corner of the street. 2.To point out the workplace of somebody. e.g: Ali works at my shop. 3.To mention the time. e.g: He left the party at 3 o’clock.

UNDER: UNDER preposition is used in the following cases: 1. To point a position that is below something. e.g: The cat is under the table. 2. Law statements e.g: We all are under government laws. 3. To express a particular process. e.g: The hostel is still under construction.

ABOVE: An ABOVE preposition is used in the following cases: 1. To mention an object present on height. e.g: Cat is above the table. We are flying above the clouds. 2. To mention something greater in number. e.g: Today the temperature is above 38.

Behind: Behind preposition is used in the following cases: 1. To mention something back to somebody. e.g: Ali is behind me. She glanced behind me. 2. To show less progress. e.g: We are behind the schedule.

AFTER: After preposition is used in the following cases: 1. To mention something later in time. e.g: We shall leave after lunch. 2. To mention time. e.g: The guest are coming after 2 hours. 3. To mention a contrast to something. e.g: The weather became pleasant after rain.

Before: Before preposition is used in the following cases: 1. To mention something earlier in time. e.g: He arrived before 5 o’clock. 2. To express somebody is ahead of something. e.g: His name was before mine name in the list.

INTO: Into preposition is used in the following cases: 1. To mention a position in or inside something. e.g: Ali dived into the water. 2. To mention the direction. e.g: Speak clearly into the microphone. Date 10-10-2020

3. To mention time duration. e.g: She carried on working late into the night.

ONTO: Onto preposition is used in the following cases: 1. It is used with the verb to mention movement on or to a particular place. e.g: Ali stepped down from the train onto the platform. 2. It is used to show that something faces in a particular direction. e.g: The window locked out onto the terrace.
