Description

Erik Erikson

Ok, so I created the Twitter account. Login information is listed below. I set a profile picture and banner picture, but you are more than welcome to change them. I added some options above, or you can search for others and do as you please. I also wrote the bio and set the location as his place of birth. I have listed below all pertinent information to this gentleman. Below some of the bullet points, I have put some tweet suggestion of my own (typed in blue). You do not have to use these – just some little things I thought of. The tweets that are written in quotations are actual quotes from Erik Erikson – maybe we can incorporate some of these. Be as clever as you can, but not overly so. Remember, this guy is old. I think the best approach is to comprise a list of the tweets on a Word document so that we can review them together before you actually type up the tweets. Just a suggestion. Let me know if you have any questions but try not to call me too early (before noon) because I’ma be cranky. K, love you.

Focused on psychosocial development throughput the life cycle o “You can’t be psychosocially underdeveloped your whole life.” Individuals undergo eight stages of development with the unconscious goal of achieving ego identity 3 of these stages are beyond adolescence – with the final one occurring in mature adulthood o “Good things come to those who age.” At each stage, the individual experiences a major task to be accomplished and a conflict to be resolved; the conflicts of each stage of development are the foundations of successive stages o “A man’s conflict represents what he ‘really’ is.” Depending on the outcome of the crisis associated with a particular stage, the individual proceeds to the next stage of development in alternative ways People are assumed to proceed through stages as they as they become cognitively and emotionally more capable of interacting within a wider social radius Hence, each subsequent stage requires additional cognitive and emotional development before it can be experienced The individual in the last stage of life is confronted with the task of ego integrity vs despair o The eighth and last stage of psychosocial development in Erikson’s model; aging individual achieves wisdom and meaning or despairs because he or she views one’s life as lacking meaning The older person accepts the inevitability of mortality and achieves wisdom and perspective, or despairs because he or she has not come to grips with death and lacks ego integrity A major task associated with the last stage is to look inward in order to integrate the experiences of earlier stages and to realize that one’s life has had meaning, whether or not it was “successful” in the traditional sense Older people who achieve ego integrity feel a sense of connectedness with younger generations and share their experiences and wisdom in them Generativity (the desire to help and mentor younger persons) may be the most critical variable for achieving ego integrity and continues well into old age o Generativity may take the form of:  Counseling  Mentoring  Sponsoring an individual or group of younger people

 Focusing on one’s legacy  Writing memoirs or letters or sharing oral traditions  Assuming a leadership role in one’s community The process of sharing one’s memories and experiences with others (orally or written) is described as life review, and it is a useful form of therapy with older adults o Life Review: a form of therapy that encourages discussion of past successes and failures and coming to terms with one’s life Life satisfaction, or the feeling that life is worth living, may be achieved through these tasks of adopting a wider historical perspective on one’s life, accepting one’s mortality, sharing experiences with the young, and leaving a legacy to future generations Erikson’s theory suggests that personality is dynamic throughout the life cycle This theory fits the person-environment model; we interact with a variety of other people in different settings, and our personality is affected accordingly Erikson’s Psychological Stages o Basic Trust vs. Mistrust  To establish basic trust in the world through trust in the parent o Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt  To establish a sense of autonomy and self as distinct from the parent; to establish self-control vs. doubt in one’s abilities o Initiative vs. Guilt  To establish a sense of initiative within parental limits without feeling guilty about emotional needs o Industry vs. Inferiority  To establish a sense of industry within the school setting; to learn necessary skills without feelings of inferiority or fear of failure o Ego Identity vs. Role Diffusion  To establish identity, self-concept, and role within the larger community without confusion about the self and about social roles o Intimacy vs. Isolation  To establish intimacy and affiliation with one or more others without fearing loss of identity in the process that may result in isolation o Generativity vs. Stagnation  To establish a sense of care and concern for the well-being of future generations; to look toward the future and not stagnate in the past o Ego Integrity vs. Despair  To establish a sense of meaning in one’s life rather than feeling despair or bitterness that life was wasted; to accept oneself and one’s life without despair

“Ego integrity, therefore, implies an emotional integration which permits participation by followership as well as acceptance of the responsibility of leadership.”

Tweet Suggestions           

The purpose of life is a life of purpose “There is in every child at every stage a new miracle of vigorous unfolding.” The goal is not to live forever, but to create something that will “Life doesn’t make sense without interdependence. We need each other, and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all.” Have you mentored today? “I am what survives of me.” Produce unanticipated change through unfiltered contributions “In the social jungle of human existence, there is no feeling of being alive without a sense of identity.” “The more you know yourself, the more patience you have for what you see in others.” “Healthy children will not fear life if their elders have enough integrity not to fear death.” “A child becomes an adult when he realizes he has a right not only to be right but also to be wrong.”...
