PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action -Inhibit cell wall synthesis! -Bactericidal

Therapeutic Use -Treats serious infections caused by multiple types or organisms

Complications -GI symptoms(nausea/vomitting - may occur if infusion is too strong)! -Thrombophlebitis at injection site! -Possible cross sensitivity with other antibiotics w/ beta lactam ring -Suprainfection w/ Candidiasis

Contraindications/Precautions -Allergy to -Allergy to cephalosporins carbapenems -seizures and CNS disorders -Allergy to -Renal impairment penicillin

Interactions -Monobactam, penicillin, and cephalosporin antibiotics may decrease effect of imipenem

Medication Administration -Only in IM & IV form! -IM & IV are not interchangableuse correct form for presciption!

Nursing Interventions -Monitor nausea and treat with antimetic -Monitor IV site for redness and swelling during infections -Assess/report antibiotic allergy -Monitor for secondary infection (oral candidiasis)

Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Monitor pt's response to drug -Monitor resolution of bacterial infection
