Dr. Strangelove - A...

Description

Dr. Strangelove Kubrick chose to film his movie in black-and-white rather than in color. What is the effect of this? What mood does it create? What relation to reality does it establish? Filming this movie in black-and-white as opposed to color creates a very old-fashioned effect. Because the movie is set in the time of the Cold War, it is meant to portray an old time feel. This black-and-white style also gives off the feeling of a gloomier, serious movie, creating an even greater intensity when the viewer realizes what it is about. It also makes it feel like a classic movie, as most black-and-white films we watch now are classics. The black-and-white effect is mainly to alter the viewer’s emotion and reaction when watching the film, as it creates a much different feel than a color film does. Note all the sexual imagery, language, and situations in the film – what is this intended to suggest? The sexual imagery, language, and situations in the film add to the ridiculousness and comicality of the movie. Everything about the movie is meant to challenge the viewer’s emotions. Ultimately, the goal of the entire movie was to bring some humor to what was, otherwise, an extremely dark time. It was to make light of a situation that the end of the world could be sooner than they imagine. The overt sexuality throughout the movie has the ultimate goal of disrupting the spectators to make them contemplate the Cold War. Some people claim that Dr. Strangelove is a subversive, anti-American film. What do you think? I would agree with the critics that Dr. Strangelove is a subversive film, but I would not agree with the anti-American aspect of criticism. The movie mocks the nationalism our country’s culture portrayed throughout the Cold War, and makes light of our outrageous behavior. Instead of going along with the fear instilled in all Americans of the time, it brings a new perspective to the mix. The anti-American criticism is too harsh, in my opinion, because the movie is only trying to help viewers think more critically. If anything, our ability to create a film to laugh at the situation is completely American. Did you enjoy this film? Why or why not? I did enjoy this film. It combined a unique sense of comedy with a serious situation, creating an entertaining movie. This movie is classically American, as it demonstrates satire and American wittiness, and I can see why it is look upon as a classic. Beyond the humorous aspects of the movie, though, I liked how it depicted the more serious Cold War, as well. It shows the fear instilled in the world, and how close we came to a nuclear war because of one man’s actions. Despite the humor aspect, it shows a very possible scenario and real interpretation of the Cold War era....
