Description

My experience with K12 schools

When I first moved to the US I was in 8th grade, I started going to Sycamore Middle School in Illinois, where I went to for one year, and eventually I went to Sycamore High School, but only for 7 months. Because both schools were in a very small town named Sycamore, located in the DeKalb county. The schools weren’t very big, there were only about 400 students in each of the two schools. The majority of the students lived in houses, but there were a lot of them who lived in local farms, most of their parents made a living by working at local small businesses, factories, or working in the farms. The teachers were mostly from the Chicago area, and most of them got their degrees in other states, but then eventually came back to Illinois. Some of the teachers went to local universities, the closest and most common one was Northern Illinois University (NIU), which was in DeKalb. Even though some teachers were from Sycamore, the majority of them was from Chicago. I remember having a chemistry teacher, Mrs. Bower, who was born and raised in Sycamore. She always treated the students as if they were her own family, she knew everyone’s names, even of those who weren’t her students. Every student in the school wanted to have her class. Because Mrs. Bower would always joke around, her class was the class that I looked forward to everyday. Every time she taught us something new she would make fun experiments in which she would let the students participate. She treated all the students nicely, and even when she punished a student she would be nice and fun, and she would help the students in trouble improve. In the other hand, I also had a class which I didn’t enjoy so much. Mrs. White was also a teacher who was born and raised in Sycamore, her class was one of the classes I didn’t like very much,

because she would always get mad at me because I didn’t understand her accent very well. I would always apologize and tell her that it was because I had just gotten to the US, but she just ignored it and tried to look for other reasons to give me detention. Sometimes she would give me detention because I couldn’t understand her questions and always asked “what?” when she asked me something. I remember that she used to pick on a lot of students, and even give them bad grades even though they asked for extra credit activities, but she also had her favorites who she always treated very nicely and would very often give extra credit to. If I was a teacher I would treat all my students nicely, even the messy ones, because I always liked teachers that become familiar and interact a lot with students. Also I would try to help students who have difficulty learning by keeping them after school to help them and give them activities to help understand the subject better. I would try to understand the trouble-makers and try to encourage them to do their homeworks and participate in class in order to get good grades. I believe that every student has enough potential to learn and have a good education, it only takes dedicated teachers who are willing to take their time to deal with the students....
