Etymology of the word uber...

Riley1 Claire Riley Kent Kosack Seminar in Composition January 18, 2018 Uber Everywhere Imagine having your favorite restaurants’ food delivered right to your door, a ride to work when your car is in the shop, or even a ride home after a night out with your friends. Wouldn’t this be a safer way to get people who are under the influence home? Imagine if all of this was not a pigment of your imagination, but a reality. In 2009, Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp launched a first of its’ kind company that brings almost anyone in the world to the places they need to go. How do you think they came up with the word uber? Is it an acronym for something? Actually, the word uber was in dictionaries before the company used it for their luxury car service-who knew? The word originated in Germany as “über” and it meant “above”. It was then translated to the English language meaning “topmost” or “super”. For instance, “Michael Jorden had an uber game last night, he scored nineteen points and had eleven rebounds!” Currently, I believe this word will be the new “google”, meaning that it started as a noun and now also can be used as a verb. For example, “Hey Fred, want to uber to the Phillies game today?” or “I do not know what onomatopoeia means, so I’ll google it.” Personally, ever since the company was launched, I have heard “uber” more frequently than ever before (mostly because I love saying it). Since “ubering” places is seen as boujee and for the middle-upper classes, famous rappers have incorporated the companies name and ideas in to some of their songs when talking about their aspirations for fame, like the song “Uber Everywhere” by Travis Scott.
