Description

Michaela is climbing. She is representing atypical development because usually children at this age are only just starting to learn to climb up and down the stairs while interchanging their feet without help. Climbing is important because it empowers children to perform everyday functions such as walking and running, playground skills and sporting skills. This is representing atypical development because Michaela is more advanced in her gross motor skills than other children.

According to Pimento, “manipulative skills tend to involve objects such as balls and include throwing catching, kicking, trapping, striking, volleying, dribbling, bouncing, rolling (object), and punting. Furthermore, opportunities to practice a range of these (and other) motor skills help a child develop the skills and confidence to master more complex skills, opening up avenues for a lifelong active lifestyle” (Pimento, 346).

According to the Virtual Child reports, “Michaela’s gross motor skills are above average for example: climbing, riding on trikes, kicking balls and playing catch”. (Virtual Child Report)....
