Adapting to Climate Change

Name BSC 1005 June 30, 2020 Mrs. Flanagan

2 Adaptation is at the core of survival. It is what animals and humans have depended on since the world started turning. When a change occurs in the place a species has lived in for years they either move and adapt to a new place or die. Adaptation is very important to animals because it helps them adjust to their environment for a higher chance of survival. However, this is adaptation can be hindered by rapid changes such as climate change. If climate change slowed down the chances for animals being able to adapt to their new environment would increase exponentially and keep animals from becoming endangered or worse, extinct. As explained before adaptation is when an animal changes to become better suited for the environment they live in. Adaptation is never a full proof system and sometimes it fails which has dire consequences. If adaptation fails a species it can lead to death or extinction (Rumbaugh & Washburn, 21). Common examples of adaptation are features on animals such as teeth or color. Animals who do not eat meat do not have sharp teeth whereas animals such as lions, whose diet consists of mostly meat, have much sharper teeth than that of saying a rabbit. Another example is animals who have certain colors for survival reasons. Butterflies are known to have bright wings so that when opened they scare off predators. Stick bugs are the same color as bark from a tree so they can blend in and be hidden which makes it easier for hunting prey and surviving predators. Every living organism has a feature that helps them survive longer than if they did not have that feature. These adaptations are ones that have been around for a while but that does not mean the animal is done. Different species are continuously having to adapt to new lifestyles especially due to coexisting with humans. Humans are constantly tearing down forests and building on top of lands that have been the home to animals for many years. This causes them to move to a new area and try to adapt to that new environment. Poachers, people who hunt animals illegally due to either them being
