Description

Amber Johnson REL 211 7:45 Brother Pyper Matthew 5 1. I chose to write about Matthew 5:48. This stuck out to me because Jesus Christ is declaring the higher law throughout the chapter. He says don’t just not sin, but instead actively do good things. He refutes the “eye for an eye” idea and says to turn the other cheek. Then verse 48 tops it all off with “be ye therefore perfect.” I struggle with perfectionism, feeling like if I don’t do everything perfectly, then I’m failing. However, studying this more shows that I don’t have to be perfect right now; I just need to be working on becoming the person God wants me to be. 2. Doctrine and Covenants 67:13 – “Ye are not able to abide the presence of God now, neither the ministering of angels; wherefore continue in patience until ye are perfected.” JST, Hebrews 6:3,10 – “And we will go on unto perfection if God permit….For God…will not forget your work and labor of love, which ye have showed toward his name.” 3. Jeffrey R. Holland, “Be ye Therefore Perfect—Eventually,” Oct. 2017. – “every one of us aspires to a more Christlike life than we often succeed in living. If we admit that honestly and are trying to improve, we are not hypocrites; we are human.” Russell M. Nelson, “Perfection Pending,” Oct. 1995. – “We need not be dismayed if our earnest efforts toward perfection now seem so arduous and endless. Perfection is pending….It is the eternal perfection that God has in store for each of us.” 4. How can we better foster an atmosphere of love and support, to support each other as we all try for (and fall short of) perfection? 5. I talked about this topic with my sister Jennifer. She stated that toxic perfectionism is a big problem in the church, maybe because we believe God wants us to be perfect eventually. However, it’s easy to forget that perfection doesn’t come in this life, and any progress towards perfection is success. She said that avoiding judgement and gossip will help, and making sure people know that you love and support them, even (or especially) when they fall short. 6. This commandment from God is not an easy one, and it’s not meant to be. He wants the absolute best for us, and the only way to achieve that is by requiring the best from us. But, we don’t have to be perfect on our own; Christ’s enabling power is to help us when we inevitably fall short. I forget this sometimes and get frustrated with myself. My challenge, mostly for myself, is to stop when I feel I am failing and pray to use the enabling power of Christ’s atonement in my life....
