Introduction Longevity and health are correlated with health-related behaviors such as healthy eating, weight maintenance, not smoking, not drinking excessively, and engaging in regular exercise (Ogden, 2017), but it is very challenging for most people to change these behaviors, especially long term. Most people realize that they need to change one or more health-related behaviors, and often they really would like to do this once and for all, but they are often lacking in confidence or self-efficacy (Ogden, 2017). Health psychologists deal directly with beliefs and behaviors related to health, but currently there it is not easy to obtain the services of a health psychologist because the field has not yet gone mainstream (Kaplan, 2009). Yet despite the lack of available resources, there are people who have been able to make these health-related changes successfully. Most of them will admit that it was not easy and that they struggled at times, and that they found ways to cope with it through trial and error. Only a few have had a mentor’s support, but in such cases, a lot of credit is given to the mentor for helping support them through tough times. Most of these mentors have been found through informal means. But HealthMentor hopes to make the possibility of finding a mentor through a non-profit organization a reality for those who would like that option. HealthMentor Volunteer Needs The main service HealthMentor would like to offer is access to a mentor who has had success in their own lives with a health-related behavior change. Initial questioning of high achieving health science majors has shown moderate to high interest in mentoring among those who have successfully made a health-related behavior change. One of the common requests of potential mentors is that the mentee is “serious about making the change” or other versions of that theme indicating concerns of mentoring those who are not ready to actively engage in the

change process. It is for this reason that HealthMentor requires clients to first complete an online course prior to being assigned to work with a mentor. This serves many purposes, but one of them is to make it more likely that clients will have shown themselves to be more serious about the health changes they are making. The online course will be facilitated by volunteers and because class size will be kept to about 10-15 students, there is a need for several volunteers. Filling these two different types of volunteer positions will make it possible for HealthMentor to fulfill their mission of helping as many people as possible to have a mentor and the best chance of making their health related behavior change successful. Volunteer Health Mentors are at the heart of the mission of HealthMentor. The whole goal is to help make it easier for people to change their unhealthy behaviors and more likely for them to maintain their new lifestyle long term. Research shows that having a health mentor is correlated with sustainable health-related behavior change (Moore, Jackson, & TschannenMoran, 2016). All skills and abilities will be considered. Initial and ongoing training will be provided. Priority will be placed on the ability to provide consistent, responsive, empathetic support to clients. The training will include ideas related to allowing clients to come to their own conclusions (Moore, Jackson & Tschannen-Moran, 2016), and the way mentors respond will not include any written scripts. In fact, this will be one of the highlighted benefits of the service included on recruitment and client ads. Conclusion Volunteer recruitment efforts are a high priority above most other goals of HealthMentor as they get started and this is likely to be a continuing priority. While it would be possible to have salaried employees fill these roles, that option would most likely require charging relatively

high fees to clients which is a barrier to access. This is one of the main reasons that those who set out to change their health-related behaviors look mainly to informal mentors or go on their own without a mentor. Insurance does not usually cover the cost of a health mentor, and most people just cannot come up with that in their monthly budget. The goal is to provide quality mentoring at a reduced cost (sliding fee scale) or even free of charge. So, one way to do this is through finding several great volunteers who are willing to give a few hours a week to further the mission of HealthMentor.
