1940’s ● WWII starts ○ Europe, Asia and North Africa was affected ○ All resources was being sent for war uses therefore countries had to ration food, and clothing Clothes Rationing ● Clothes rationing began on June 1, 1941 and ended March 15 1949. ● People were urged to “Make and do Mend” - while factories workers and materials were used for making parachutes or uniforms ● There was a ban on silk in 1941 Coupon book ● Citizens were given a coupon book that had 60 coupons, later it was reduced to 48 coupons ○ Each page was a different color to stop people from using all the coupons all at once - they were only allowed to use one coupon at a time - the government tells people which colour they could start using ○ Children were given more coupons to compensate their growth ○ The coupon system allowed people to buy one set of new clothes once a year Utility Clothing ● Simple lines, minimal trims, ● Only 15 styles were permitted for infants’ and girls’ dresses ● Cheaper or alternative items were available for the masses

● Wedge shoes - created by Salvatore Ferragamo shoes made with no leather ○ Used hemp, felt, raffia, crocheted and plaited cellophane ● Trousers for women - seen as statement for equality and independence for women ● Millinery - was not rationed - hats were used as a way to express femininity during the war
Hugo Boss ● Hugo Boss joined the Nazi party and began producing SS uniforms and the Hitler Youth Main Bocher ● Bocher was commissioned to design for WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) ● Because of the fabric restriction Bocher created a new innovation called dress aprons - worn over a simple cocktail or evening dress to update the existing look
Cosmetics ● Red lipstick became a staple since women cannot show off their style through fashion Victory Roll

Zoot Suit ● Double breasted jackets, padded shoulders, and huge lapels. ● Considered unpatriotic and rebellious as it uses a lot of fabric
Post War Windsor Knot Tie - worn by the Duke of Windsor - it became the most iconic tie look
Chinos: flat front beige colour twill - preppy style
Bomber Jacket ● Flight jacket that hits at the waistline and was worn by pilots
Duffle Coat: coat fastened with toggles instead of buttons, worn by the British Navy
Bikini: 2 piece swimsuit - Diana Vreeland calls it the most important important invention since the atomic bomb Dungarees: dark blue work pants or overalls

Dior accepted the Neiman Marcus award He starts a wholesale business in the US 1940’s Review Sheet 1. Everything was rationed from food to clothes because of the war. Food and materials that were used to make clothing was sent to soldiers
