Expected Pharmacological Action Provide elemental iron, an essential component in the formation of hemoglobin. Iron is a mineral needed to carry in the red blood cells throughout the body.
Therapeutic Use Iron Deficiency Anemia
Complications Dizziness, headache, syncope, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dark stools, epigastric pain, GI bleeding, temporary staining of teeth
Medication Administration PO: liquid 75mg/ml, 300mg/ml; tablets 200mg, 300mg, 324mg, 325mg.
Contraindications/Precautions Anemia not due to deficiency, hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, hypersensitivity to iron products. PUD, ulcerative colitis, alcoholism, severe hepatic impairment or renal impairment.
Nursing Interventions Assess bowel function for constipation or diarrhea. Notify physician or other
Interactions Decreases absorption of tetracyclines, fluroquinolones bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, mycofenolate and penicillamine.
