PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action The expected pharmacological action for ferrous sulfate is for the mineral to infiltrate vthe blood, in order to be dispersed throughout the body in order for propper iron storage.
Therapeutic Use
The therapeutic use is that it helps treat with the prevention or treatment to someone who might have iron deficiency.
Complications
Seizures, hypertension, tachycardia, constipation, dyspnea, myalgia, fever, GI bleeding, and vomiting.
Contraindications/Precautions It should be used cautiously when a pregnant or lactation, since safety is not established yet for parenteral products. It is contraindicated in hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, may contain alcohol, tartrazine or sulfites.
Interactions Oral iron supplements might decrease the absoprtion of tetracyclines, bisphophonates, fluoroquinolones, levothryoxine, mycophenate mofetil and penicillamine.
Medication Administration The medication should be administered to an adult, PO either 120 to 240 mg per day, divided in 2 to 4 doses. For a neonate and premature baby its PO, 2 to 4 mg per kg per day in 2 divided doses. Wth a maximum of 15 mg per day.
Nursing Interventions The nurse should asses the patient’s nutritional status and dietary history to see the risk for anemia, assess bowel function for constipation or diarrhea, signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, monitor hemoglobin, hematocrit and plasma iron concentrations.
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness When evaluating the patient, the nurse should evaluate for an improvement in iron deficiency anemia, an improvement in hemoglobin by the end of 1 to 2 months as a desired outcome of the medication.
