Synopsis

Kingsman: The golden circle is a sequel to the film, Kingsman: The secret service. This 2017 movie is directed by Matthew Vaughn and written by Jane Goldman. This movie starred lots of talented cast such as Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Hale Berry. 2018 was a proud year for the Kingsman’s team because they are the winners & nominees for the Empire award for best thriller. This movie received a huge positive feedback from the audience & managed to collect $410.9 million worldwide.

This movie is a sequel from their first movie which is called Kingsman: The Great Service. It has 3 main characters in this movie which are Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, Merlin and Harry Hart. A year after the previous event of the last movie, Eggsy finally joined the Kingsman. When the Kingsman headquarters are destroyed and the planet is kept hostage, their journey leads to the discovery in the U.S. of an ally spy agency named "Statesman," which dates back to the day they were both created. Eggsy and fellow agent Merlin are forced to team up with the statesman, the Kingsman’s American counterpart. Together they must seek to keep Poppy from unleashing her terror against the world.

New Media vs Cyberculture

Based on our studies, New Media is defined as mass communications using technologies such the Internet. Nowadays, we can access almost all of the information with just a single click. According to Laura Silver, in 2019 , she estimated that there are 5 billions of people who own a phone. This proves that new media are becoming the new way of lifestyle or can be defined as cyberculture. It's true that new media are making our life easier but somehow people are starting to become addicted to smartphones. These addictive devices are making people start to become lazy, and dependent on their smartphones in their daily lives. Back to the 1990's, communicating can only happen if people meet each other. With this advanced technology, people can easily communicate with each other anywhere, anytime and everywhere. For example, people can make video calls with their friends through whatsapp, facetime and skype. In this movie, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, these are examples referring to the new media & cyberculture:

New Media as Computer Technology used as a Distributor Platform

New Media nowadays makes it easier for people to share anything they want through the internet. People can access all the information through platforms such as google, twitter, instagram and facebook. For one who is eager to get fresh updated news, they can gain the information through online magazine platforms such as Harian Metro online and The Star online. For movie-lovers, new media contribute a lot of conveniences to them. They can access all kinds of movies anywhere, anytime without having any difficulties. There are many types of movie platforms such as Netflix, Iflix and Astro On The Go. Kingsman: The Golden Circle premiered on 18 September 2017. After a few while, this movie is distributed through online movie platforms such as Google Play. Without New Media, Kingsman: The Golden Circle movie distribution will be limited only to cinemas. This proves that New Media as Computer technology used as a Distributor Platform.

Google Play provided Kingsman: The Golden Circle movie for users to buy or rent.

New Media as Data controlled by Software To make a quality film, good softwares must be used. Usually, Computer Graphic Imagery (CGI) to make a seamless scene and unrealistic scene that is impossible to do without CGI. This software is important in order to make the audience visualise the scene clean and clear. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is popular because of its CGI effect used in most of the scenes and the audience feels like it really happened. This movie will not be amazing as they are because the usage of CGI does contribute a lot. The most iconic scene from Kingsman: The Golden Circle that uses CGI is when Merlin accidentally stepped on a mines bomb right in front of The Golden Circle which if he moved, he would be dead. After singing a song ‘ Country road, Take me home’ with his colleague Eggsy, Merlin sacrificed his life to make sure that Eggsy managed to defeat the drug cartel.

This is an iconic scene where Merlin sang a song and sacrificed himself for the sake of the team.

This is from one of the behind the scenes scenes where they used CGI to make a difficult scene look real.

New media as The Mix Existing Cultural Conventions and The Conventions of Software In our opinion, New media as the existing cultural conventions and the conventions of software can be defined as something that relates to our cultural lifestyle but it has been improvised with the help of software. For example, back to the old days when there was no software, people tended to just sketch on the paper but when the software was introduced, people started to draw on tabloids and export them to the software application to make them as animated movies. In Kingsman: The Golden Circle movie, the editor uses a software application to draw the effects such as explosions in the movie. If there is no software, this effect would never happen because the explosion will be a harm to the actors. Furthermore, there are scenes showing cultural conventions in this movie which is instead of using a bag to bring an item, Eggsy uses it as a weapon and shield to the enemy. This proves that new media is important as The Mix Existing Cultural Conventions and The Conventions of Software.

New Media as The aesthetics that Accompanies the Early Stage of Every New Modern Media and Communication Technology Aesthetic value maybe will not be the same for every person because it is subjective. People are free to describe their opinion on it. Aesthetic elements contribute to create a mood that will attract the audience's interest to watch the movie. Aesthetics in films are being measured by lots of things such as technology, scenery and art. In our opinion, there are many scenes that fulfill our criteria to be aesthetic enough. Those scenes amazed us on how perfect the CGI is being used and it looks realistic. If those scenes are real, it would be interesting and fun to have them in real life.

Merlin introduced their brand new weapon to Eggsy and Harry.

Conclusion As a conclusion, Kingsman: The Golden Circle fulfills all 5 of the elements stated by Lev Manovich. The movie shows lots of ideas of cyberculture, as the scene when Merlin uses his phone to communicate with his colleague, Eggsy, to discuss the mission that they will do. If there was no phone, the communication of Merlin and Eggsy will never be easy and their lives will be harmful because of lack of communication. Nowadays, new media can be considered as the way of lifestyle to people. They tend to distribute and upload anything that they want. To be clear, This movie fulfilled ‘New Media as Computer Technology used as a Distributor Platform’ Criteria because instead of being premiered in cinemas, this movie is distributed to the online platforms which can make the audience easier to watch the movie anytime and anywhere. Nowadays, software is the main key to the success of a movie. Without software, a movie will be full of flaws. In this movie, all of the scenes were perfectly made because of the help of CGI. How can an explosive scene be made, if there is no software. As we mentioned earlier, this movie is ‘New media as The Mix Existing Cultural Conventions and The Conventions of Software’ because there are scenes where the editor draws the effects and scenery to make the movie perfect. Lastly, for the aesthetic elements, the movie shows a lot of amazing scenes and beautiful scenery using the help of CGI. Although the aesthetics are subjective, we sure that most of the audience loves all the arts and editing in this movie.

In New Media, there is a lot of knowledge that we should explore without any hesitation as the New Media are getting advanced day by day. Maybe in a few years, the film will be more advanced than this day until we can never imagine how perfect it is. The growth of New Media will never stop as it becomes stronger day by day and this technology does really help in film making industry.
