: The factors of child marriage and its impacts towards the children

Introduction ATTENTION 1. Attention getter a) Child marriage is still a thing in certain countries. b) Marriage between a child and an adult is frequent in Malaysia. c) Marriage is a form of bond that adults should undergone, not children.

2. Reveal Topic a) Child marriage is not a rare phenomenon that happens in Malaysia. b) In fact, it is regularly practiced by the community in Malaysia , especially Muslims community.

3. Establish Credibility a) Assalamualaikum and greetings to all. I’m Danial Azimat bin Wong Voo Yung. b) And today I will be presenting my topics on child marriage in Malaysia.

4. State central idea a) Child marriage actually have a lot of factors to why it happens frequently in Malaysia. b)

(Transition: let’s start on why children are being married in Malaysia.)

Body ISSUE

1. Lack of education among children in Malaysia are one of the driving factors of marriage between children and adults. a) First and foremost, education is important as it can prevent the parents from allowing their children to marry early in their teen years as they are aware of the damage attached to child marriage and would view the practice unfavorably. i.

According to BMC Women’s Health on their research article in 2020, many of the women in their study dropped out of school or never been to school, primarily due to family poverty.

ii.

These women are then married off by their parents. Some of them are arranged by their parents as early as the age of 16.

iii.

Among the 22 women that participated in the research, many of them married because their family does not care whether they are betrothed early as they are busy thinking about how to make money because of the poverty that they are currently in.

2. Religious practices are also one of the big factors in child marriage in Malaysia as it is justified. b) In Muslims culture, marriage before puberty is often justified via religious injunction. i.

According to the Department of Syariah Judiciary in Malaysia, the Shariah court does not have an issue with child marriage applications.

ii.

The discretion of judges in determining whether an application should be approved depends on the maslahah of the child.

iii.

Some muftis in Malaysia also view the concept of wali mujbeer, the authority of fathers to marry off their daughters without their consent, as relevant and practical today. But some also argue that this view is no longer relevant as the daughter knows more about their husbands than the father and also stated that the fathers should not in the best interest of their children, married them off willing fully. (Transition: so, why is child marriages is a problem in the first place?)

EXPLANATION 1. Researches has suggested that children, mostly females that is married in their early age have high risk and long-term negative impact on their health. a) This issue has repeatedly been brought up by many organizations, but proper action has not been taken to deal with it. b) Exposing children to sexual acts in their early teens may impact their body because of the physical and mental immaturity of a children. c) Children who are forced to gave birth in their teens because of child marriage may physically damage their immature body. 2. Girls who are married to much older men could also be caught into a greater risk of spouse violence. a) The unfortunate start of their early married life tends to lead to long term abuse and trauma. b) They are also vulnerable because they cannot fend for themselves at such a young age when they are being beaten, slapped, or threatened by their husband. c) Some of the reports stated by international council of research on women (ICRW) also stated that girls who marry well below their puberty describe their first sexual experience as being forced. (Transition: do you still think that married life at an early age is that good as people tells you?)

VISUALISATION 1. In my opinion, child marriage is acceptable if both of the husband and wife love each other, but what about the children who are forced to be married off because of poverty? a) Try to imagine, how do you feel when you are sending off your daughter to be married off to a grown man because of money? i.

When that happen, you know you have done a terrible thing to your daughter, you just destroyed her future and her chance to a better life.

(Transition: child marriage is not a bad thing but, we have to think before marrying at an early age)

CONCLUSION ACTION 1. There is no shortcut in life, marrying early won’t help either. Teach our daughters and our sons that, every decision that we make in life, will have consequences. 2. Teaching ourselves to be more involve in our kid’s life is also one thing for them to know that they are loved and they do not need any other relationship when they are still this young. That’s my two cents for you, thank you.
