OUTLINE FOR INFORMATIVE SPEECH...

Description

INFORMATIVE SPEECH OUTLINE Name: Tran Tran Topic: Homelessness in the United States General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about one the most concerned problem in the United States-homelessness Central Idea: Homelessness is a major problem in the United States. Introduction: A. Attention Getter: They’re everywhere; they’re on the street, at the bus stop, even the corner of shopping mall and being more than 500 thousands of them in the United States. It’s no surprise you’ve guessed it. B. Reason to listen: We all had our opinions and heard statements regarding the homeless be it keep walking avoid eye contact or my personal favorite ignore them and they’ll all go the way, but the truth of the matter is this problem isn’t going away. C. Thesis Statement: Homelessness is a major problem in the United States. D. Credibility Statement:  I have done research on the Internet  I have gathered the information about homelessness from the Nation Coalition for the homeless and the US Conference of Mayors. E. Preview of Main Points:  First, I will talk about poverty-the leading cause of homeless  Second, I will discuss personal problem  Finally, I will discuss a story about attack on the homeless Body: A. Poverty is the leading cause of homeless  Guy Trevor-a former interior designer prior to the foreclosure crisis he says: “I see myself as a casualty of a perfect storm the people sleeping at the parking lot are very friendly, they’re just like me-they come from normal, everyday homes. I think a lot of people in this country don’t realize that they too, are a couple of paychecks away from destitution.”  A recent survey done by careerbuilder.com stated, “Four-in-ten workers say they often or always live paychecks to paychecks”.  According to the National Coalition for the homeless, “For families and individuals struggling to pay the rent, a serious illness or disability you can start a downward spiral into homelessness and considering that one third of every person

living in poverty has no health insurance whatsoever one bad break are one illness can send an entire family down the road to homelessness.” Transition: Now that I’ve discussed the leading cause of homelessness, I will now continue to discuss deeper about the cause from homeless themselves. B. Personal problem is the second major contributing cause of homelessness in the United States.  According to the Nation Coalition for the homeless, “Nationally approximately half of all women and children experiencing homelessness are fleeing domestic violence.”  According to the US Conference of Mayors, “only 16% of the single adult homeless population suffers from some form of mental illness.”  And according to the National Coalition for the homeless, “The increase in homelessness over the past two decades cannot be explained by addiction alone.” Transition: We have gone through 2 major factors leading to homelessness, now I want to tell you a story and I want all of you to think about how the homeless are treated. C. Six years ago, Nathan Moore was a typical 15yo boy like typical 15 year-old things like playing video games, watching movies, hanging out with friends. Some of his friends decide to play a game or what they consider the game of taunting a 49 year olds homeless man Rex Baum it started innocently enough or as innocently as this can get with yelling and screaming but eventually escalated to hitting and punching and then throwing anything and everything that I saw in sight from sticks, rocks to bricks even the homeless man’s barbecue grill.  “The National Coalition for the Homeless (2016) finds that over the last 17 years, at least 1,657 people experiencing homelessness have been the victims of violence perpetrated for the sole reason that they were unhoused at the time. This number includes 428 men and women who lost their lives for being homeless and in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Conclusion: A. Review of Main Points:  Today I first talked about poverty-the leading cause of homeless  Second, I discussed personal problem as a second cause  Finally, I discussed a story about attack on the homeless B. Restate Thesis: Homelessness is a major problem in the United States. C. Closure: As the years continue so as to the number attacks on the homeless. As we’ve seen the causes of home since are typically due to unexpected and unpreventable circumstances and the majority of people experiencing homelessness today are everyday folks such as ourselves who fell into one of these situations. It is also clear that these actions of abuse are unacceptable but actions derived from attitude and currently our attitude stinks we give abuse rather than compassion beatings rather than sympathy and

avoiding eye contact rather than addressing an issue with more vigorous action. It is clear that change must start within ourselves but the real question is “Are we willing to change?”
