Taylor Adolff Hillside Hall Versus Gorham Hall

Dorm buildings on campus is always one of the hot topics that are talked about. I have always heard that Hillside Hall is the nicest and that Gorham Hall is one of the worst, so I decided to create a survey to see truly what people think of the on campus housing here at the University of Rhode Island. The specific criteria that I decided to look at while taking this survey was: cleanliness of the two buildings, price of living, noise, size, and the convenience of travel to academic buildings on campus. One important thing about dorm buildings is the cleanliness. All of the dorm buildings on campus get cleaned almost every day, but in reality, really how clean are they? According to my survey, about 45% of the people said that they would rate the cleanliness of Gorham Hall a 2 out of 5. Gorham’s age is yet to be determined, but I do know that it is one of the oldest dorm buildings on campus which most definitely helps to contribute to it being one of the dirtiest. FIGURE 1

As you can see in Figure 1 above, only about 32% of the participants in the survey gave Gorham

Hall higher than a 2 out of 5 for the level of cleanliness. When looking at the results for Hillside Hall, we are getting results that are almost completely opposite of what we saw in the first question. FIGURE 2

As you can see in Figure 2 above, more than 60% of the participants gave Hillside Hall a 5 out of 5 for the level of cleanliness. The level of cleanliness in a building is definitely one of the most important factors when it comes to deciding on dorm buildings to live in on campus. The second factor I surveyed on was the price of living in each building. The price of living in Hillside Hall is almost $1,000 more than living in any other dorm building on campus. For one of my survey questions I asked students what they thought the prices to live in each building were per semester, but most of them did not quite get the right answer. FIGURE 3

As you can see in Figure 3 above, almost 60% of the students said they thought the cost to live in Gorham Hall was approximately $3,550, but the real answer is $3,887 which less than 20% of students chose as their answer. On the other hand, about half of the students taking the survey got the right idea on the price of Hillside Hall. FIGURE 4

On this question, it was very close with the last two answers, but more thought that the correct answer was $4,125 when it truthfully is $4,501 per semester to live in Hillside. Why is it so much more expensive? No one really has given us the answer to that question, but you can probably guess it is because the building is no more than 5 years old and the university wants to

get back the money that they used to build it. Another important factor that the survey looked at was the noise levels in both of the dorm buildings. Gorham is known to be loud and quite rowdy and that is pretty much spot on with what the results of this survey questions show. FIGURE 5

As you can see in Figure 5 above, about 95% of the participants rated the noise level at least a 3 out out 5 on a typical day. This shows that it is definitely rare you have some peace and quiet for long. Hillside, with everyone being a pharmacy and/or nursing major definitely need some more peace and quiet so they can study and take care of all of their work. FIGURE 6

As you can see in Figure 6 above, over 60% of participants rated the noise level in Hillside Hall just at a 2 or below. The harder science majors definitely will need a significantly increased study time, so most of them spend their free time completing school work and/or studying for tests and quizzes that they have coming up so the dorm building is rather quiet during the week. Another factor we looked at was the size of the rooms in both Hillside and Gorham Hall.

FIGURE 7

In Figure 7, you can see that more than 70% of students think that the dorm buildings in Hillside Hall are larger than the dorms in Gorham Hall. This would make sense because of the new building, and they are trying to give the students more space to make liveable, but in reality, the rooms in both buildings are actually the same exact size. They both measure to be 11”.5’ x 13” exactly. One of the last factors that we looked at was the convenience of walking from each residence hall to the academic buildings on campus.

FIGURE 8

As you can see in Figure 8 above, most of the participants thought that Hillside Hall is more convenient when it comes to walking to academic buildings because it is closer to the quad. On the other hand, a little bit over 30% of participants think that the two are about the same in convenience when it comes to getting to the academic buildings. In my opinion, I feel that Hillside is more convenient just due to the fact that it is a lot closer to the quad which is where most of the academic buildings are located. As you can see, through the use of almost fifty URI student participants, we can come to the conclusion that Hillside Hall was rated overall as the better dorm. Although they have a higher price level, they do have a lower noise level, shorter walk to academic buildings, and the cleanliness levels are much higher than in Gorham Hall.
