Abstract Fred Hollows was an extraordinary character who helped cure more than one million blind people in Australia and other countries around the world. During his life Fred Hollows made many achievements including his previous studies to became an Ophthalmologists, Australian of the year award, award for aboriginal eye care, NSW Aboriginal Health Award, the training of the new generation of Ophthalmologists, nurses and healthcare doctors, the creation of Fred Hollows Foundation and Royal Mint attributed him on a one-dollar coin. Hollows’ attitude, vision, and the support of friends and family where very important to his success and as a result more than one million people worldwide have been given the opportunity to see again. Hollows inspired many people with his remarkable work for the poor leading to him being a famous Australian.

Introduction Fred Hollows, was a New Zealand-Australian ophthalmologist who became known for his work in restoring eyesight for countless thousands of people in Australia and many other countries. He started his serving humanity in 1970 when Fred visited some indigenous communities and shocked by founding spectacular infections, then he decided to travel around the world and try to find the best way for help blindness. Fred decided that to set up factories in poor countries to make the plastic eye lenses for fix cataract blindness. Fred made such a huge impact in Australia and overseas and in 1990 he was made Australian of the year. Hollows passed away in 1993, and left his 5 children alone, but now his dream is through the work of the Fred Hollows Foundation. Ruth Hollows youngest daughter of Fred Hollows said, “My dad worked his entire life against the injustice of avoidable blindness, the Fred Hollows Foundation continues his work, and with new technology we can keep Fred dreams alive. Fred established a foundation and worked hard to instantly diagnose for the onset of life caused by diabetes with thousands and thousands across the world. Now they are able to look the eyes of 6 million people, that's a hundred people per day and 30000 per year, that sight saved, and life changed. Fred believed that all Australians should care for their brothers.

Brief History Professor Frederick Cossum Hollows, known Fred Hollows was born on April 9, 1929 in Dunedin to Joseph and Clarice Marshall Hollows in New Zealand. In 1958 Fred Hollows married Mary Skiller. In 1961, he went to Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in England to study ophthalmology. Four years later they moved to Australia. Whilst in Australia he became the professor of Ophthalmology at the University of New South Wales. In the same year, he was given an advance Australia award. By the time he turned thirty-six he was head of the eye department in Sydney.He believed that everyone in the world should be the same. "Every eye is an eye, when you are doing the surgery, there that is just as important as if you were doing eye surgery on the king." (fredhollows.blogspot, 2010). In the 1970s, Dr, Hollows was shocked when he was worked on indigenous communities. He

stated in 1970 that, " no one should suffer from eye disease in a great country like Australia". Also, he trained local doctors in poor countries to carry out the operations themselves, furthermore Dr, Hollows set up factories in the Nepal and Eritrea to make the plastic eye lenses, to fix Cataract blindness. Dr, made on impact in Australia and multitude of countries throughout his career, which lead to his achievements of becoming Australia of the year in 1990. Sadly, Fred Hollows passed away in 1992, but now his dream is through the work of the Fred Hollows Foundation. Hollows believed that all Australians should care brothers and he is proved that, one person can make a huge difference in the world, as he made it by established hollows foundation. "The Fred Hollows Foundation continues his work, and with new technology they keep Fred dreams alive (Australia Government, 2015).

Achievements "It is obscene to let people go bling when they do not have too" (Fred Hollows Foundation, n.d.). Fred Hollows was a remarkable character very well recognized in Australia and New Zealand who believed in equality and was a man committed to his work. He made many achievements such as completing his studies in England, successfully training fellow Ophthalmologists and the creation of Fred Hollows Foundation while also receiving numerous awards including Australian of the year for his work with Aboriginal eye care and the NSW Aboriginal Health Award. Hollows work was also recognised by The Royal Australian Mint with a one-dollar coin attributed to him. Professor Fred Hollows made his first achievement in 1961 when he moved to England to study Ophthalmology at Moorfield's eye Hospital, helping him to became a successful eye doctor (Lam, n.d.). In 1981 after his hard work with Aboriginal communities across Australia Hollows received his first recognition of Advance Australia Award for Aboriginal eye care by the Advance Australian Foundation (The Fred Hollows Foundation N Z, 2005). Furthermore, 1990 was a big year for Hollows, with his work in helping people recover their vision attracting the attention of people in Australia that lead to obtaining three recognitions. The first was an Australian Human Rights Medal from the Australian Human Hobart Group

Rights Commissions, second was Australian of the Year from the National Australia Council and third was an Advance Australia Award for Medicine and Overseas Aid by The Advance Australia Foundation (Australianoftheyear.org, n.d.). During his career Hollows began to train many people who were interested in becoming an Ophthalmologists and it is believed that a significant number of people where trained by him. Nowadays more 1000 people are working at the Fred Hollow's Foundation (Fred Hollows Foundation, 2012). According to Australia Government, (2015) another important achievement of Hollows was the creation of the Fred Hollow's Foundation in 1992, 5 months before his death. This foundation is the greatest achievement of Hollows and is now based in 18 countries around the word helping a significant number of people regain their vision. Finally, in 2010 Fred Hollows was recognised as a famous Australian character and as a result his work was recognised by The Royal Australian Mint with a one-dollar coin attributed to him (Baume, 2017).

Essential elements of success There were many elements that were crucial to the success for Fred Hollows such as personality, family and people that helped supported him.

Personality The kind-hearted and compassionate personalities Fred Hollows had was one of the elements to his success. This aspect is shown in his willingness to cure many people without gain of significant recognition. He would be quick to recognise a problem and even quicker to find a resolution and act on it. The travel to Aboriginal communities between 1960 and 1970 highlights his compassionate personality as he helped more than 60000 people regain their sight. (Fred Hollows Foundation, 2012). From his willingness to serve people, Hollows was able to treat people not just in Australia but globally as well. Throughout the years between 1980 to 1990, Hollows travelled with his team to poor communities to cure people going blind from eye disease. Due to his generosity, Hollows set up clinics in these poor

communities to treat people but also to help doctors be aware of different eye diseases and teach them how to cure it. (Australian Government, 2015). Hollows was also known for having a strong robust personality. His passion came from having a 'can do' attitude to all situations however because of his over-enthusiasm, he was sometimes considered short-tempered or outspoken. He was given the nickname 'Wild Colonial Boy' of Australian Surgery because of his love for the bush and his temper (Australian Government, 2015). One of the famous quotes by Fred Hollows to highlight his direct attitude is 'When I've seen an opportunity, I haven't sat down and called a committee meeting...we've gone and done it (Australian Government, 2015). This direct attitude Hollows had was influential in inspiring fellow doctors to be more like him.

Family Fred Hollows had a wonderful family that supported him throughout his career. Through the support he was given, he was able to treat many people globally and share his success with various people. One of the most influential people that helped Fred Hollows was his second wife Gabi. They first met during the early 1970s when Gabi was training as an orthoptist. Together they would work collaboratively with their team which took them all over the world and also be part of different programs such as the National Trachoma and Eye Health (Baume, 2017). The more significant event happened in Australia where they visited more than 465 Indigenous communities in outback Australia where they examined 105000 people, treated 15000 and operated on 1000 between 1976 to 1979 (Baume, 2017). Another person who had a significant influence in the career of Fred Hollows was his father, Joseph. His interest in social justice was attained from his father which was significant in his passion to treat people.

Education A primary factor to the success of Fred Hollows was the education he received before he became an eye surgeon. After he completed his secondary education at Palmerston North Boys High School and decided to pursue medicine rather than ministry, he began his tertiary education at University of New Zealand. After a few years experiencing work at Wellington, Auckland and Tauranga, he became interested in the field of ophthalmology.

Conclusion Fred Hollows was a famous Australian who approached many achievements. He made a huge change in the world in terms of giving the opportunity to people who were blind to be able to see and also help people with eye weakness to fix this problem by creating lenses. One of the greatest achievements of Fred Hollows was building his foundation to help people around the world to get medical help. We can also mention that he was able to help over one million of people in Australia and other countries to be able to get their sight. There were many different elements that made Fred Hollows a successful person and some of them are his personality, his great family and education. Fred was incredibly a kind person and he would care about people. He was also a hard-working person who spent most of his life to help people with different eye problems. The other important reason is the fact that he had a supportive family. his wife Gabi and his father were the most important people who influenced him in such a way to be successful. Fred’s education was also an important element of his success.
