ART APPRECIATION ACTIVITY/ESSAY Function and Philosophical Foundation of Art

What art form/artwork has changed something in your life. Why? Art plays an important role in our lives. When I was in my younger age, I used to listen in music every day because it always makes me feel good and happy, but there is one song that is close to my heart and that is the song entitled "Keep Holding On" sang by my favorite music artist, Avril Lavigne. It changes my life in a positive way as it changes my perception about my self, my strengths and abilities. During the time that I am drowning in my own thoughts or if I fail as a student, as a daughter or as a person, I always listen to it. It gives me a relaxing vibe and makes me forget about my regrets and burden in life. The lyrics of the song hits me so hard. Every word and every phrase make me understand its deep message. It is a motivational song and it really serve its purpose, to make everyone feel better, to eradicate stress and depression.

In your home what art/thing do you consider as very important and significant in shaping you as a person? The art or thing in our home that plays a significant role in shaping myself as a person is our chair. As shown in the picture above, that chair is not 'just' a 'chair' for me. In fact, that is 10 years old and it always remind me of my childhood. It reminds me on how happy I was in the past, with no problem, no regrets and no burden. It reminds me how happy the world that surrounds me way back before, not just like this year that full of chaotic happenings. Aside from that, every time that I see that chair, it helps me to value things that has been helpful to me in the past, and not to throw them away just because it is old and dull. It also helps me to look back on who I am before, what I want to be and how I deal with problems. I always have nostalgia whenever I see that chair. It

makes me sad and happy at the same time, sad because I missed my old self, happy because it helps me to become a better version of myself.

Does art always have a function? Why? Support your response. Provide your own example. Art always has a function but it depends upon its context and it varies based on how other people perceived its function and purpose. I used to write poems or essay way back before and it have a function and purpose, it is either to entertainment myself, to inspire other people or to enhance my reading and writing ability. I didn't write a poem or essay because I just want to do it or with no reason. Every time that I experience new things or I encounter obstacles, I want to express it through writing. It helps me to feel at ease and to have a piece of mind. Just like the other artist, their poems have a function. They express their love, anger, rebellion, unity and the like through writing. Another example are the architects, they construct a home to provide us a safe shelter in aesthetic way or the artist who creates furniture just like the chair, tables etc. in order for us to have a comfortable chair to rest, or the table that holds our things and the like. There are so many artists who creates an artwork with a function....
