Gassed by John Singer Sargent in 1919 The painting was painted in 1919 by John Singer Sargent. He made it just after the end of the first world war. On the painting, you can see many wounded and dead soldiers. Their eyes are bandaged due to being exposed to mustard gas. In the foreground, some of the soldiers are laying on the ground resting waiting for medical aid. In the middle ground, there is a dozen bandaged soldiers forming a line. They are holding the shoulder of the soldier in front of them, walking towards the medical tent guided by a medic. In the background, there is another group of bandaged soldiers being guided and a football match being played, enlightened by the sun.

The first noticeable thing is the soldiers forming a line. Then the eye is drawn to the bottom of the painting where all the soldiers are lying, then towards the sun. After looking at the sun, the eye starts looking at all the injured soldiers. It is hard to tell if they are dead or alive. The scale of the painting is 2.3m x 6.11m and the painting is seen from a normal perspective. The colors of the painting are green combined with yellow, and the sun creates a golden glow that represents hope. The glow from the sun makes the tone warm. When looking at the painting, the feeling of isolation and sadness is clear. Because of all the soldiers walking towards to medical tent. But on the other hand, you get this warm feeling because of the glow. There are many feelings involved in the painting. There is the feeling of destruction, vulnerability but also more positive feelings. There is the feeling of comfort, guidance and the strong bond between the soldiers.

John Singers painting reminds us of the number of falling soldiers in World War 1. It reminds us of how many people sacrificed their lives for their country. He puts focus on pain the soldiers felt and the devastating effect of mustard gas. Almost every soldier in the painting has their eyes bandaged due to being exposed to mustard gas. The little part that has not been exposed is either playing football or helping the injured soldiers. Those soldiers who does not have any physical injuries, most certainly has emotional injury. When talking about a war, it is hard to imagine how nasty it was.
