This is an upper division synthesis class that satisfies Area B5 or D4. Students must have completed their lower division work in these areas to take this class. Why is this class important? In this class you learn about how California functions and what it means to be a resident of this state. Classroom Civilities Give each other the benefit of the doubt as community learners when engaging with others either in class or on Blackboard. Please turn off all cell phones during class. Using cell phones in class prevents you or others from learning. I expect each of you to be professional and courteous to your fellow classmates. Laptops and tablets may be used for note-taking purposes only. Need or take a call in cases of emergency, please take your phone outside. This includes headphones too. Because random arrivals and exits are disrespectful and distracting, please plan to arrive to class on time and to stay for the entire class period. If circumstances dictate that you must be late or you know that you will need to leave early, please take a seat close to the door so you do not distract others during class time. Classroom participation is a part of your grade in this course. You must attend class prepared to fully participate. Questions and comments must be relevant to the topic at hand. Classroom discussion should be civilized and respectful to everyone and relevant to the topic we are discussing. Classroom discussion is meant to allow us to hear a variety of viewpoints. This can only happen if we respect each other and our differences. Any discussion from class that continues online should adhere to these same rules and expectations.

Exams There will be two online midterms and an online final exam given in this course on Blackboard. The final is not a comprehensive exam. Make-up exams will only be given if arrangements were made with me prior to the day of the exam. It is your responsibility, the student, to notify me in advance if you are not going to be able to take a scheduled exam. Assignments (Topic Papers, Weekly Modules, & Discussion Posts) There will be 5 topic papers, 15 weekly modules, and 15 discussion posts given in this class via Blackboard. Assignments will be accepted for up to one week past the due date for a whole letter grade deduction (e.g. an A gets lowered to a B - a 10% deduction from the grade you received). I will not accept late assignments that are over a week past due.
