WHAT IS GESTALT THEORY?

• Form of psychology • The sum of the whole is worth more than its parts • Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kohler, and Kurt Koffka • Important for designers

Gestalt theory is a form of psychology that teaches that the over all idea of the image is more important then the sum of its parts. And that you need to see the whole idea to be able to correctly understand what the image is trying to convey. It was created by the German thinkers Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kohler, and Kurt Koffka. And focused on how people interpret the world. It is an important philosophy for graphic designers to incorporate in their work.

GESTALT’S LAWS

• • • • • •

Figure-Ground Similarity Proximity Closure Continuity Order

Gestalt Theory follows several laws. These laws are Figure-Ground, Similarity, Proximity, Closure, Continuity, and Order. Figure-Ground is when you see separate objects in the image. One is in the focus and others are in the background. Similarity is when we place objects with similar characteristics together. Proximity is when we group together objects that are close to each other. Closure is when our minds close objects that are not actually together, in order to create a whole image. Continuity is when we follow objects that are in a line, until that line ends. Order is the belief that alignment and symmetry are attractive elements of design.

HOW MY WORK RELATES TO THIS THEORY • Proximity • Closure • Order

In my work I tried to implement the laws of Proximity, Closure, and Order. The black dots are following the rule of proximity, as they are all close to each other and meant to be grouped together. The wings are following the rule of closure as it is visibly a wing, while it is not closed off with lines. And the symmetry of the wings and heart are following the rule of order, as it is meant to be the same on both sides. But I did have trouble keeping it symmetrical, and it is not as good as I would have liked it to be.

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATION

• Internet search • Bible

For my research I did a google search of gestalt art examples, as I was having a hard time understanding how to incorporate the theory. The search did help to better understand how the theory could relate to painted art. For my inspiration I used the bible, in particular the verse: John 4:8 “ Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” NIV.

CONCEPT MESSAGE

• Gods Love

The wings draw to mind an angel, and angels symbolize God. The heart represents love. So it is simply God’s Love.

6

CONCEPT D EVELOPMENT

I started with my blank canvas. I then painted on the background and let it dry. While it was drying I drew an angel wing and cut it out for a templet. I then held the wing on the canvas and went around it with black acrylic dots. My brush was not very stiff so it did not create the dots as clean as I wanted them to be.

DIFFERENT ANGLES

Here are three other pictures that I had took of my piece. But they were not as clear as the one I choose to use.
