Global Warming & Climate Change

For the past few years, we have been noticing a considerable and significant rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system. This phenomenon of rising average air temperatures near the Earth’s surface over the past 100 to 200 years is called Global Warming. If it is left uncontrolled, it could have a catastrophic effect on the planet. There are various activities taking place which have been increasing the temperature gradually. Global Warming is melting our ice glaciers rapidly. This is extremely harmful to the earth as well as humans. It is quite challenging to control global warming; however, it is not unmanageable. The first step in solving any problem is identifying the cause of the problem. There are two causes of Global Warming, the first one is natural and the second is human-related. The natural causes include the release of greenhouses gases which are not able to escape from earth, causing the temperature to increase. Methane is also one big issue responsible for global warming. Another cause of global warming is greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases, such as carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide, trap the solar heat rays and prevent them from escaping through the surface of the earth. This has caused the temperature of the earth to increase. Further, volcanic eruptions are also responsible for global warming. That is to say, these eruptions release tons of carbon dioxide which contributes to global warming. Since the industrial revolution occurred some years ago, Industries have been using fossil fuels for power machines. Everything that we use involves fossil fuel. Besides industrial, ASME | Hamza Nazir

transportation, such as cars, is also releasing carbon dioxide from their exhausts. Excessive use of automobiles, fossil fuels, and activities like deforestation, mining and cattle rearing are really harmful to the environment, and are the primary contributors to harmful gases such as carbon dioxide. If carbon dioxide in the environment increases, the temperature of earth will increase and the Earth will start acting as a greenhouse.

Climate change is a normal process that has been taking place since the creation of the earth. Climate change usually takes a lot of years. However, due to the global warming effect, climate change is being experienced more frequently. The rapid changes in climate have an impact on the weather patterns exhibited, and that is why global warming effects are severe and unbearable in terms of the extremes they come in. With the occurrence of global warming, if the global temperatures rise above normal by one degree, still the climate will be affected by this one-degree rise. The ice mass will change because the high temperatures will cause the ice to melt. In the process of ice melting, the water flow to water bodies increases thus causing a rise in sea level. Not only the melting ice causes an increase in sea level but also the extremities in weather patterns such as heavy rainfall among others. The rise in sea level results in flooding. Flooding is an effect of climate change. Then because of all these reasons, severe weather conditions such as drought, massive storms, and extreme heat are experienced. One of the most obvious effects of global warming is extreme weather. The weather patterns are rapidly changing in all parts of the world. The increased rainfall in certain regions affects the balance that animals and plants need to survive. Climate changes cause health problems, animal migration, and the lack ASME | Hamza Nazir

of food resources. Extreme heat and droughts in diverse regions of our planet have become disastrous to human health. The heavy rains have led to the greater prevalence of floods. Global warming creates more natural disasters. Extreme weather events will continue to occur with greater intensity. Increase in average temperatures is the major problem caused by global warming. The average global temperature has increased by about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit over the past 100 years. 2016 was recorded as the hottest year worldwide in our entire history. The sea-level rise accelerates 0.12 inches per year in overage worldwide. This trend will continue if gas emissions remain unchecked. People are to be blamed for rapidly melting ice, warming oceans, and rising sea levels.
