The Global Expansion of Marriott: Myanmar and Laos Comparison I am gladly presenting to you a report on Marriott International, Inc., its global expansion plans and the factors involved. As a well-esteemed multinational company in America, Marriott International, Inc. offers diverse services in the hospitality industry to its wide clientele either directly or indirectly through franchising. Its main objective is to provide quality service to its customers. The main resources for the company are its employees such as housekeeping, food service, and customer support staff. Therefore, to achieve its objective, human resource issues that involve attracting, acquiring, managing and retaining best talents are key. Marriott International operates in the hotel and hospitality industry that offers services such as accommodation, bars, restaurants, café among other travel and tourism services. Guided by the mission to be the leading hospitality company in the world, Marriott International, Inc has expanded its presence from its base in Bethesda, Maryland, USA 127 countries; owning 30 leading hotel brands and 6500 properties. It also takes pride in operating award-winning loyalty programs; Marriott Rewards, which includes The Ritz-Carlton Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest. In addition, it already has a 3-year growth plan to open 1700 hotels globally, add 275,000295,000 rooms by the year 2021, integrate Starwood fully and improve the Sheraton brand. To achieve these goals, Marriott International Inc. uses the system of franchising and managing properties rather than owning, as well as acquiring operating businesses. In its global expansion plans, there are macro-economic environmental factors that are considered. These are political, economic, socio-cultural, technological, environmental and legal factors, arranged in their respective PESTEL ranking at Marriott. Here, I compare the impact of these factors given two different locations; Myanmar and Lao. In Myanmar, the environment is politically unstable due to its military domination. On the other hand, the LPRP has helped to establish political stability in Lao, although this is contrasted by rampant corruption. Myanmar has potential economic growth due to its strategic location while Lao needs infrastructure improvement. The socio-cultural environment of Lao is encouraging for the hospitality industry in terms of labor while that of Myanmar encourages in terms of the market, but poses labor challenges. Technologically, both locations have challenges, nevertheless, new investments can introduce new technologies. Lao faces more environmental

hazards than Myanmar which has maintained its natural resources and lastly, Lao is significantly working towards a strong legal system while Myanmar is still stuck with its weak one. From the above comparison, I, therefore, recommend that it is better for Marriott to invest in Lao than in Myanmar. However, given the current dynamics, I propose investing in 5-10 years and not now.
