Nicholas Nerys Curiale Here We Aren’t, So Quickly I was never good at showing emotion. I would just stand there with a smirk on my face. I watched people cry and smile. I watched everyone say goodbye for the last time. They texted me the first week of September telling me they can’t wait to see me. They all wore their best clothes to school. Don’t forget their best sneakers either. They always dressed to impress other dudes. They were guys, trying to impress guys. A little weird to me. I always focused on my work. They always focused on their women and money and clothes. I always wanted to be done with school. They just cut every day. I pictured myself in college. They pictured themselves playing basketball that afternoon. I graduated. I got my diploma. They got the GED. I finally bought my first car. I was always ready super early in the morning. I honestly just liked to sit in my car. I liked to bump my house music on my new stereo system. I secretly fist pumped. They couldn’t see me though. I had the most dark and illegal tints. My teacher said senior year would fly. We didn’t believe him. We just stared at his golden hair. We joked. We laughed. Now it’s June. We just arrived at Hofstra. We now sit in the

big auditorium with our caps on. They were in Sewanhaka? Since when? They look cool; I should have been friends with them. I thought you were a seventh grader. My bad. Whatever. I won’t see them again anyway. Why is everyone throwing their caps in the air? Oh wait. We just graduated....
