How is a CIS a better solution to collecting and storing data? “Master person index (MPI), links a patient’s medical record number with common identification data elements” (Bowie, 2018, 8-2a). These records can either be housed manually on paper and in files or electronically via a platform known as a clinical information system (CIS). Though the collection of data may take the same amount of time between the two styles, the retrieval and usage of the data is vastly different. A CIS allows physicians to easily gather this data in order to make decisions quicker than paper data would allow them to, and that is why in my opinion, a CIS heavily outweighs manual collection of healthcare data.

Explain at least one way a CIS is adaptable and accessible compared to a paper system. The accessibility of data stored in a CIS is one of the biggest benefits of the platform. Data is meant to be viewed and used to make educated decisions. If this data is difficult to access, it may be seldom used making the collect of it a waste of time. The other adaptable and accessible factor of CISs are the fact that many of them are becoming “cloud based” and can be viewed anywhere unlike the paper copy held within a room in an office.

What is the financial impact on an organization? Though I was not able to find a specific monetary amount a CIS would cost to implement for an organization, Donte states in a blog post on Biohealthmatics.com, “Initial cost of acquisition: the high cost of basic infrastructure of clinical information technology can be a stumbling block to many healthcare organizations” (Donte, 2018). CISs are not inexpensive to implement, and many organizations struggle getting over this fact; however, I believe the non-monetary cost of staying

with a paper data system is more costly. CISs can improve the level of healthcare a clinic can provide by reducing the amount of errors and increasing efficiency (Islam, Poly, & Li, 2018).
