Resume Writing Assignment– Amounts to 5% of the Final Grade Assignment Overview: This assignment provides students with an opportunity to improve their skills in writing and reviewing cover letters and resumes. You will gain important skills that will help you throughout your career. Also, the assignment is designed to connect you with the abundance of resources available at MRU. Deliverables 1. Bring to class a first draf of a resume and a cover letter prepared for a job posting you want to apply for/had applied for. 2. Attend the class for the guest speaker session on September 24th, 2019 3. Prepare a revised resume and cover letter for the same position. Bring it to the class for the peer-review and discussion session on October 1st, 2019 4. Participate in the peer review and discussion session on October 1st, 2019 IMPORTANT DATES September 24th October 1st

Guest Speaker presentation – Building a great Resume (FIRST DRAFTS DUE) Peer evaluation of resume/cover letter and in class discussions about the specific resumes & cover letters (HARD COPY OF REVISED DRAFT DUE)

Please note that the students MUST BE IN CLASS on these two dates to earn the marks associated with the assignment. Instructions: 1. Apply for a job of a HUMAN RESOURCES COORDINATOR. You should print out the advertisement and bring it along to class. 2. Prepare a draf of your resume and cover letter by September 24th, 2019 and bring it to class. A guest speaker from MRU Career Services will be in class on this day to provide valuable information and guidance in preparing resumes. You can use this session to evaluate your resume and find ways to improve it. 3. Please note, a classmate and the instructor will be viewing this information. As such, you may choose to place false contact information (i.e. e-mail address, mailing address and phone number) and you should not place any information in the documents that you do not wish to share with anyone else. With this in mind, the documents are not intended to be fictitious, as more accurate and realistic work will be beneficial to you and provide you with material that you could actually utilize at some point in the future. PLEASE DON’T FABRICATE EXPERIENCE/ QUALFICAITONS TO FIT A POSITION. 4. Improve and/or redraf your resume & cover letter based on the input from the career services guest speaker and prepare a resume and cover letter reflecting the best practices for writing resumes and cover letters. This is due in class on October 1st, 2019. We will have a review session of your resumes with your peers. We will also have an in-class discussion about the Resume & Cover letter writing specifically focusing on your experience.

HRES 2170 5. The instructor will collect a hard copy of your resume and cover letter for a brief review and assignment of credit. For a more detailed review, you can submit your resume and cover letter to the career services.

General Guidelines for the Resume Writing Assignment 1. Cover letter: o one page in length and; o professional in appearance, including appropriate fonts, layout and margins. 2. Resume: o standard format recommended by MRU Career Services; o no longer than 2 pages in length.
