HS5237 u08d2- Summarize Interview This learner was to interview an individual with a disability and inquire information about how he/she think counselors can work to eliminate diabolist’s attitudes and prejudices when working with disabled clients. This learner interviewed a client with leg amputations. His main concern was “what would you do if you had no legs to walk and for each time you reach for your leg it was not there?” I could not imagine what he was feeling or had felt at the moment he realized it had to happen. He continued to say that as a counselor, “one must know exactly what we are going through. Having to get help with things we once climbed to get or having your toe itch when a foot is not there; you have to have gone through these things; it’s easier said than done.” Although he explained that he had no prejudice toward counselors, deep within, he knew that they didn’t understand the attitude they carried around. Five ways in which this learner can be a more effective counselor when working with disability clientele, would be to develop rapport with the client and explaining to him that although he has an issues of sort, someone else have a greater disability. Second, this learner would find intervention programs that would suit the needs of her client; third, seeking spiritual help is another motivational process which requires one to focus; the fourth, as with Sue & Sue (2008), this learner too will understand the prejudices and barriers often faced with disability clients. This learner will redirect any self-blame noted and explain that struggles happen to the best of individual. Lastly, this learner would help family member refrain the problem so that positives can be identified (Sue et al, 2008). By encouraging the individual to work harder and overcome obstacles, he can heal him/herself within and outward. Sue, D.W. & Sue, D. (2008).
