Success of the Performance Improvement Plan

Financial Implication

The effects of lack of communication in the healthcare field can be very costly. Per the medical safety experts at CRICO Strategies out of 23,000 medical malpractice lawsuits that they investigated it was found that over 7,000 of them were due to miscommunication between the staff (HIPPA Journal, 2021 p.4). The costs of those miscommunication errors cost upwards of $1.7 billion in malpractice plus over 2,000 deaths that could have been prevented (HIPPA Journal, 2021 p. 4). In a study that was done by the Joint Commission it was found that 80% of medical errors that were serious were because of lack of communication as well (HIPPA Journal, 2021 p.4). By having a successful RIE (see the project charter below) that leads into the training of the front staff at Sarah Bush Lincoln on effective communication and knowing the difference between emergent and non-emergent phone calls the hope is that it will help financially by lessen the visits to the ER for patients and possible admission. This will also hopefully help reduce the number of potential malpractice suits due to the lack of communication. It will take all of the stakeholders involved to make this plan a success.

Existing Information Management Contributions

Sarah Bush Lincoln strives to be the best in its community and the surrounding areas. Information management systems help to improve patient satisfaction and effective communication. By utilizing the brand new EMR system (Cerner) it can increase the

communication between providers, nursing staff and front staff, although EMR’s are not always full proof, they can help to reduce any errors in the patient records and communication. It is great to have EMR’s to communicate, however, verbal communication is also necessary at times such as emergent situations that can’t wait for a message to be answered such as the situation that currently happened at SBL. This is where the training will come into play on when to use the EMR for messaging and when to verbally communicate to each other.

Organizational Processes that Permit Continued Viability

The process that will need to be used to be sure that there is continued viability will be continued training for all staff. Each year the staff takes what are called Ollie’s, these are tests that all employees have to take to be sure that they understand the safety and goals of the hospital. Therefore, after the RIE, initial training there will be annual competencies for the front staff and any other staff that feel they need a refresher on effective communication. Not only will the current staff be trained and have will annual competencies but any new staff have this same training as part of their onboarding.

Interdepartmental Communication Patterns

For the plan to be effective each clinic will need know when verbal communication versus communication via the EMR (Cerner) are appropriate and know the “key words” for emergencies. Reminders can be included in the daily charge that is read each morning with all of the staff in all of the clinics and SBL, this reminder could be a question and having the staff provide the answer to the said question. By doing this it keeps these important factors upfront

and fresh in their minds. The annual competencies will help to keep the communication open as they are reminded of the importance and what to do in emergent situations.
