Written Assignment Unit 2...
I chose, “In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd, Ana Menéndez.” The title caught my attention as I really do admire German Shepherds. The story is about four aging Cubans who gather regularly to play dominoes in a park as they share their bitter and happy moments as immigrants in America. Apart from the game is their competition to tell the best joke of the day. The story pictures about love, sadness, and happiness. It also shows that despite having sadness, there's always room for humor as life must go on. Yes, I do like the story because it shows how tough life can get. The success we try to attain and the sacrifices we make. The best part of the story is when the Cuban men gather for their dominoes sessions as they observe the tourist around which brings back their paste experiences and the lifestyles they had before America. It is a story I feel that can be related to most people.
MENÉNDEZ, A. (2001). "Life is a string you could gather up in your hands all at once"
Raúl and Máximo had lived on the same El Vedado road in Havana for a long time before the insurgency. Raúl had been a public accountant and Máximo an educator in an institution, two blocks from his home on L Road. They were not dear companions, however familiar in the way of individuals who originate from a similar spot and think they know the significant things around each other. (MENÉNDEZ, A, 2001, para. 8)
