NAME: Madeleine Shimazaki
CAPTURE: “Increase in Learning” David A Bednar, chapter 4. PURPOSE (Why): to learn the framework of the gospel by recognizing doctrine, principals, and applications
Central Messages (What): 1. Gospel doctrine truths are revealed by God 2. Principles are never changing and are based on doctrines 3. We can apply the doctrines and principles in everyday life 4. The framework can be put together to help us learn and be more diligent
Validations/Applications (How): 1. The Godhead, Atonement, and Plan of Happiness enables us to know why we must become like God and Jesus Christ. President Packer mentions that true doctrine that is understood changes attitudes and behavior. 2. The fourth article of faith explains the guidelines we should stay by. Bednar mentions that “the Atonement explains the why, and the principles focus upon the what.” Principles are also personal and can be interpreted differently depending on one’s life circumstances. 3. We can use non-distraction principles by keeping our mouths, eyes, and ears clean. 4. The principles, doctrines, and applications are tailored to each person for their own growth. “The purpose of the framework is for you to explore, to experiment, and to exercise faith in the Lord as you learn for yourself ‘the doctrine of the kingdom” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:77).
VALUES (So What): 1. Heavenly father gives us doctrine that is never changing with principles that can be interpreted at a personal level. 2. We can take those and apply it to our lives by consistent practice and faith of the gospel. 3. This creates the framework that makes God’s church available to all of His children when they choose to follow in Jesus’ footsteps....
