Week 5 IND 299 5-1: Final Project Milestone 3 Southern New Hampshire University November 29h, 2020

Concentration

The concentration that I have chosen to accompany my BA of General Studies is Exploring Liberal Arts. As a co-teacher moving forward in my career as a lead teacher; exploring liberal arts in full of components that I use every day in the classroom which is one of the main reasons I chose this concentration. Earlier in on of the first personalities tests we took it said that I was Charming, Independent and Energetic which are also characteristics used with many Liberal Arts majors. I have always had a love for the arts specifically music. When sorting through the “Exploring Liberal Arts” concentration with my advisor it allowed me to really recognize all the components that make up what Liberal Arts are. The first component I would like to highlight is the “humanities, history, and literature to broaden their perspectives” (Southern New Hampshire University n.d.) As a special education co teacher that teaches a selfcontained classroom we teach all teaches in our classroom. History is a major subject that gives an opportunity to teach my students about past and present. Literature allow us to teach the student about language in its most basic farm so that they are always able to communicate especially if they are ever alone and must speak for themselves. Also stated on the site is that “humanities and liberal arts also increase an individual’s critical thinking and reasoning skills and improve communication” (Southern New Hampshire University n.d.) which is what excellent teachers do every day. You must be able to communicate with students in a basic way, parents/ colleagues in a way that is both professional, respectful, and confident. I feel so confident that this concentration will go perfectly with my current field and help accelerate me to the next level as a lead teacher.

Enduring Strengths Three enduring skills/strengths that I feel go hand in hand with a concentration in liberal arts and I hope to strengthen with my coursework classes that I have to complete are Effective Communication, Resourcefulness, Problem Solving, and Flexibility. These enduring skills are tools I use I everyday as a person and a co teacher. I truly through the next year to strengthen these skills, because I recognize how vital they will be in the next step of my career as I move forward with my goal of becoming a lead teacher.

Coursework Quantitative Reasoning & Problem Solving- “This course focuses on the development of sound quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills, as applied to everyday situations.” (SNHU n.d.) Special need students use problem solving in all areas of learning since it has been shown that hypothetical learning is incredibly difficult for certain disabilities. I plan to use the mathematical knowledge in this course to further my math skills in my classroom. English Composition- “This course focuses primarily on the basic elements of college composition and writing as a process.” (SNHU n.d.) This class will push my writing skills which will assist my writing of official documents for my students. Perspectives into History-“More than just dates, names, and places, history is the study of the human condition. It seeks to understand human behavior through the thoughtful examination of different types of historical source”. (SNHU n.d.) This class will also assist me with acquiring knowledge from the past about how children with special needs were treated and why that happened.

Perspective into Natural Science-“serves as an entry point into the natural sciences which concentrates on the natural world that both surrounds us and includes us.” (SNHU n.d.) This course will show me a greater picture about natural science. I assist teaching this subject but in a very basic way. Perspectives into Social Science- “This course will focus on the questions social scientists ask in their research of individuals, families, and larger society, as well as how social scientific inquiry has developed over time.” (SNHU n.d.) This course is a 200-level class and will dig deeper into people, families, and our society and how we have gotten in the place we are now. Applied Natural Sciences- “Students will engage in inquirybased learning which utilizes natural science methodologies and apply these toward problem solving skills in contemporary topics.” (SNHU n.d.) Applied Social Sciences- “Students engage in inquiry based learning by selecting a current issue and exploring it from the perspective of social scientists (psychologist, sociologist, anthropologist.)” (SNHU n.d.) . World History and Culture-“This course is designed to offer the student a historical and cultural understanding of Africa, India, China and Japan, in their interactions with the western world.” (SNHU n.d.) this course is my first 300 level course and will give me an in depth look at our World and Culture through the lenses of the three countries and one continent listed above. Personally, I chose this course because my knowledge on this subject is very small and felt it would be of great help in my classroom. Poetry Workshop- “This course is a roundtable forum in which 10 to 15 students will write short or long poems using traditional and experimental forms.” (SNHU n.d.) Since this is my last 300 level class, I thought it would be fun to take a poetry class would be fun and exciting. Its only 10-15 students and my student this school year love poems. This class will help me teach the development of great poems for my student instead of using google. IDS Senior Class is my

final and last class is a 400-level course. I have not chosen a class yet and am honestly lost when it comes to making a choice. I will meet with my advisor next to try and make a final decision.
